Axis FMJ's
« on: September 10, 2009, 10:49:00 AM »
I just picked up 4 of these at a local shop. I wanted to try a few before I spent the money on a whole dozen. These arrows are shooting awesome!

My question is about the durability.....Has anyone has any major problems with them dinging/bending?

I'm ready to order some more, but they are pricey...just want to make sure I won't be disappointed.

I used them and they were no more durable than aluminum...but for twice the cost.  I used them up and never bought another one.  They shot great...don't get me wrong, I just saw absolutely no benefit over cheaper aluminums.

They will bend. I have found them to be pretty durable though. Maybe not as tough as the axis nano but they will take a pretty good beating. I like my FMJs though.

They will bend but are durable enough for most of our needs. They cost too much for me to stump shoot with but I don't do that with any of my hunting arrows. :)
....Quality deer management means shooting them before they get tough....

FerretWYO,

The nanos are better??  I went to FMJ's and they did not really take as much punishment as I expected.  I have used the Epic Nanotube arrow, which is significantly cheaper than the axis and still thinner than standard carbons and felt they shot well... I may just go back to that arrow with a light weight tube for penetration... hmmm...

Currently I am using Beman MFX arrows.  I like the flight, but the HIT Inserts are VERY VERY weak and WILL break with any pressure to the sidewall of the arrow.  That is how ALL my arrows have broken this year.

The more I think on it the more I like the idea of getting 12 Epic Nanos...

Erik

Thanks guys. I make try out the Nano camos....looks like they weight the same as the Fmj's.

I had been having a problems with my regular size carbons grouping just a bit right (I'm a lefty). These skinny carbons took that away and are going right down the middle.

Hey Allen ... Aim a little to the left and save yourself some $$ ...   :biglaugh:  Randy and I had three days of rain in WY but managed to shoot our bucks on the last day. Nothing like that whopper you shot but we saw several of them. Good shoot'n to you.     Ken

I have both. I do use the nano fo stump shooting and 3-D, I swithched to them in the last year because of price. I do still have alot of FMJs and shoot them often though. The set for my recuve i have been shooting the same dozen for a couple years.

As eric and I said though the nano will not bend and take a better hit.

I use 500's with a 100 grain brass insert for my longbow,(Cari-Bow Wolverine, 50@28, arrow weighs 525 grains), and 400's with the standard aluminum insert for my compound(Bowtech Admiral, 63@29, arrow weighs 410 grains), both with 100 grain Montec's. They're great shooting arrows, just don't hammer it into something solid and expect the point and insert not to be driven into the shaft, lol  :)  Side impacts with other arrows while target shooting can cause a crease in the aluminum sheath, not a problem for the longbow, but I put it out to pasture if that happens to one for the compound! You'd have to reef on one pretty hard sideways to bend it, I've never bent one, though I've broken and lost a few  :) ! My hunting's done at 30 yards and under and I use gateway Razor feathers for my trad arrows, and Bohning Blazer 2's for my compound arrows, both 3 fletch at 2 degree's straight offset. This setup offers great side wind resistance, and the FMJ's fly accurately with the Montec's to 30 yards!

Thanks for all the input guys.

Ken, glad to hear you and Randy got your bucks. I've been setting up a new bow, and these arrows are the only ones that I have found that have me really "dialed" in.  Good thing....season is getting pretty close.  :archer:

Footing them would help that. That design is poor the way the insert gets shoved down so far in the shaft with just carbon between the point and the insert.Footing seems to help quite a bit.

Thanks Steve, I remember seeing that thread before. I'm ordering some today. I'm going to stick with the FMJ's since I already have 4 of them.

I am using a Flipper rest, and the FMJ's are completely silent when drawn, where my regular carbons make just a bit of noise.

Thanks for the input!  I may foot my remaining MFX arrows before the season opens next week just for piece of mind... but I am going to build a set of Epics today too and try them out... should be pretty cool!
