After the shot experiences!!!
« on: September 14, 2009, 11:29:00 PM »
I would like to know if a deer will bed down with an arrow in them, i dont mean fell over dead but actually bedded down like a paunch-hit deer carrying the arrow.
Also do you see a difference in the distance a deer has run if the arrow stay's in as opposed to passing through?

Anyone have any blood trail photos? I can figure out if the deer is lung shot is bubbles in the blood, but what color red is a liver, heart muscle? Wish i had comperison photos.
The knowledge of the tradegang is amazng and i hqve learned so much thanks guys

Liver blood/muscle blood is red/dark red..  Lung blood either has bubbles or is lighter red/pink..

Paunch has greenish/brown material or CLEAR liquid...

this is lung blood

If you see blood like that JDS3 posted your deer will be "bedded down" permanently a very short distance away. In addition to the color difference, as you can see, there is a definite spray pattern from a lung hit.

Heart and liver hits will leave splashes of blood as a rule, but they need to have an exit wound low enough on the body for it to escape as a rule. I have seen heart/liver hits with little to no blood trail, but a body cavity filled with blood. Not much fun, but usually they won't be far away.

Muscle blood can be dark or bright red depending on whether an artery is involved. These can mean a long day or night.

Yes, a deer may lie down after a hit. If not pushed, assuming a mortal hit, they will stay right there and bleed out. I'm not sure about them bedding down with the arrow still in them. Most of them either break it off or the arrow slides out as they run, or they just tip over in sight with the arrow still in them. If they run very far, I doubt that the arrow will remain intact.

Unless you hit the spine; the deer will run off injured; wounded. That happens to deer all the time; they run into branches; get antler poked by other deer; and always deer and other animals run off and recover.
They don't know that an arrow will kill them; they just know running away from danger has always worked for them.
Arrows that do not pass through; usually - normally break off on brush;trees; and such.

There are charts out there with examples of hair from different parts of the deers body; so you look for the hit site; and check your arrow; and you can tell better what kind of hit you have made; and how to react.

I have shot deer and watched them run off and start to feed and fall over dead. I have also seen bucks run off and mount does and fall over dead.

Ideally we make a wound that does not cause pain after the hit; and the deer or elk or bear takes off thinking it will survive.

I think that is a good thing.

I have seen deer that had non pass through shots run off fast as the arrow seems to be the antagonist. But ideally - the deer feels the initial impact; runs off; thinks it got away; and gets dizzy and falls over or lays down and goes to sleep from blood loss.

Bubbles in dark blood can mean a vein was hit; and veins can contract and stop bleeding. Bright arterial blood denies the brain oxygen; and those lung bubbles are a sign of a good hit.

The purpose of a arrow hit for me is not to inflict pain and panic; but to make a good hit that causes a quick death; and little pain.

After all; everything dies of something- and a cut is the least painful ( been there myself with a stiletto in the back ).

I would think it unusual for a deer to bed down with the arrow still in him. I have some with teeth marks in them where they have reached around and pulled them out.

Here's some pics of blood from a double lung shot on a whitetail doe using a two-blade head:

The deer was found dead another 10 yards from this spot.

It is very important to know where you hit the deer, if it is hit in the paunch it will bed down within 100 yards. You will find it dead there if it is left alone, it will take at least 12 hours, sometimes less but if you push it he will leave the area and likely will not be recovered. Meat blood is real dark red as is liver blood, bubbles in blood are really good things to see, a lung hit.

I watch a deer I shot in Potter County Pa years ago reach around and bite a microfite arrow off and walked another 25 yards and than went down for good..

You may want to get this book written by John Trout Jr. This is a good book to keep on hand during the hunting season. Mr. Trout writes about all of the questions that you are asking about.

I watched a young buck pull my arrow out of its back and walk away, a non-lethal hit just under the skin. I think they would be most likely to pull the arrow before lying down. I've never found one with the whole arrow still in it, unless it went down dead.

I've actually seen them pull an arrow out with their teeth.

I've had two deer that I've shot and had the arrow not penetrate all the way through.  Both deer kicked the arrow shaft with their hind legs and broke it off.  Both deer bedded down within 50 yards of the shot with the front of the arrow still in them.  Both deer didn't get back up without my help ;-) -chad

The first deer I ever shot with a recurve was small doe.  I hit her in the gut with a light arrow (this was before I was a member of tradgang and learned my lesson)  The arrow was about 2/3 penetrated and she went to the edge of the field and bedded down then got back up instantly after she hit the ground and walked another 45 yards and bedded down again all with the arrow still in her.  When we found her she had the arrow still in her.  We later discovered that when she bedded down the first time she actually poked the arrow out of the skin on the off side and stuck the broadhead in the shin of her back leg, hence her jumping up really quick.

My buck last year went a long way (part of liver and nicked one lung) arrow penetrated high at last rib angling slightly down, but did not exit.  Only a small portion of the fletching and nock were sticking out.  We found where he bedded until some coyotes kicked him up and eventually pulled him down.  The arrow was still in him when we found him.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

My stepdad shot his first deer with a bow last year. Quartering away shot, but the arrow entered too far back.  I got the whole thing on video so we were sure on shot placement.

We were also able to watch as the deer walked off, bedded down, walked off, and bedded down again before we lost sight of her. It was a morning hunt so we gave her lots of time. Long story short, we found her a few hundred yards away bedded down for the last time. She was dead and the entire arrow was still in her.

More often than not, the arrow breaks off, and I also believe that a deer might bite or kick it as mentioned above. In this case, though, she died about 500 grains heavier.

Brian K makes excellent sense. Recovering an animal may require more than a good hit. Penetration is vital as it will create more trauma & the better bloodtrail thus easier to follow. Artful followup such as reading the signs (blood, tracks, density, etc.) will indicate where & when to look. It's all part of the process & excitement. One w/o the other can spell trouble. No finger pointing. Just experience.
