Wood Arrow Shafting. Still searching!!!
« on: April 02, 2007, 06:51:00 PM »
I sure miss the days of Acme Wood Shafts...  The last 3 dz matched shafts I have ordered have been Ok at best. I ordered a DZ Custom Barreled tappered shafts from a well known person. They were out of round!! like an egg..$50+ dz. Well this last batch I got from a sponser, I ordered 60-65 and they were marked any where from 61#-69# and the grain run off is real bad. I love wood arrows but find it harder to get good quality. I remember when you bought 100 shafts, so you could pick through and get a dz or 2 that were really good. Looks like I'll just have to buy in bulk and pick out the good ones. Sure nice to pick up a Carbon arrow and know that they are all the same weight, all stright and all the same spine.  Just Venting  Sorry.........

Sorry for your bad experience. I bought 100 cedars on **** recently 75-80# they were all on the money spinewise, and frankly I was surprised at how many will make great arrows. And yes, there were some bad shafts and some grain run outs and those will become hot dog sticks and tomato stakes. But one day I too will try those 'perfect' carbons!

I recently bought 3 dozen raw tapered sitka spruce shafts. Had a few conversations over the phone, very nice to deal with. My shafts are straight, and took stain/seal well. Very satisfied thus far.

Try Foxfire Archery. It used to be Arrows by Kelly, and they have some outstanding stuff there.

What Jeff said and do not count on carbons being that great either. They have gotten a lot better in recent years but I still have found some to be 5-10#s off spine in a dozen. Shawn

Or make your own. Sure you'll put some time in, but not nearly as long as waiting for a shipment.

I turned out 24 spruce ones today in a a couple of hours, including ripping the square stock and running them through the router  set up. It's very satisfying to make them from scratch.

Lee Valley tools sells a dowel maker for under $20. It's alot of fun to make a bunch of arrows from different woods. The 3/8" cutter has an adjustable blade and is heavy duty all the way. I then drill a 3/8" hole in hickory and run the shafts through it to burnish them, they come out like glass. They also are heated up during the process and can be hand straightened at that time.

Wapiti Archery took over Rogue River Archery rebuilt the machinery and is up and running. The shafts, although I have not seen any are supposed to be as good as what Cecil and Paula were putting out according to their web site. If that is so they should be high quality shafts.

Have you tried THE CEDARSMITH in Montrose, Colorado? I get them compressed and tapered. I've never had more than 1-2 bad ones out of a dozen from him. And the good ones are 1st class
