how to build the strike plate out?

Hi Folks,

after bareshafting my new arrow creations, they seemed a slight bit to weak, so how do i build out the strike plate? wanted to ask before i ruin something.

Can put a thin piece  (or maybe toothpick size strip) of leather under or over the existing strike plate.  Vary the thickness until you find the amount of build out that gives your the best arrow flight.  Can also try heavier heads, of course.  Good luck.

I used double Velcro, the fluffy stuff for some cushion.

I used duck tape first until I found how far I needed to be.

Anything will work. You will need to experiment on the thickness. I like to use one of those plastic toothpicks under the side plate. If it is too thick, I just sand it down a little at a time till its right.

I use a paper match.

I use weed eater line. Sand the side that goes against the sight window flat.

Leather shoe lace, wooden match stick, almost anything behind the sideplate...

I just got a really thick piece of hide (about 6 or 7 mm), and tapered the edge that the fletching would first contact, and glued it on with contact cement.

I also use duct tape to find the right thickness. Then I have been using peep sight tubing cut in little pieces to build it out. The plate is made of velcro. Gary

Orion, wouldn't the heavier heads make it weaker spine?  Doesn't the plate build up make a stiffer spine?  
Just trying to get it straight. Kind of confusing sometimes.

You know the toothpick was invented in Kentucky don't you? If it would have been invented in any other state it would have been called a teethpick.

Yes the heavier heads would make the arrow weaker in spine. Building out the side plate will cause the arrow to act stiffer in spine. So, therefore I think that it is usually best to buy arrows that are slightly too weak, so that way you can use whatever point weight you like and just build out the strike plate until you get the right results. I've done it and it works great. I use Velcro and I have before just used a small piece of it and then put my main piece of Velcro over the small piece.

I used two sided foam tape to push my stick on rest out. You can get it in different thicknesses or double it up. If you had to go out a ways, you could use the two sided foam tape and then stick a toothpick and piece of thin leather over the foam.

There is a difference between Velco side plate and a hard leather side plate positioned exactly the same on a side plate..The "fluffy" Velco gives like a soft plunger button. Hard leather ( i use cordavan) acts like a stiff plunger.....I will shoot my bow when tuning and if i"m consistently hitting 1-2" right...i'll "harden up" my side plate....vice versa...micro tuning!
