Muzzy Phantom SS... to my surprise
« on: September 17, 2009, 05:46:00 PM »
With the recent birth of my son and the beginning of the school year (I'm a teacher), and after struggling a bit to learn how to sharpen my Eclipse single bevels... I broke down and got some ready-to-hunt heads.  I am going to keep working on the Eclipse heads to get them up to speed, but for now these Phantoms are pretty impressive!  They are thick, heavy, pretty quiet for a 4-blade and hit nice and hard!

Took them out today for a test run on my bh target and with a quick adjustment to my braceheight, they were blowing through, dead on where I looked!  They were also shaving sharp out of the package!  I think Muzzy really has a winner with this 220 gr bruiser... gonna hunt them this coming Saturday morning...

Can not wait to get out there!
God Bless,
Erik

I am using the 125's with a 100 gr. insert this year.  They are sharp and fly great.

I am still amazed at how well these bh fly for me... I tried a slew of different heads over the past few months, and these are the best and most accurate.  I also like Eclipse heads, but the Muzzy are just a bit more accurate for me... hoped to hunt them tomorrow, but, alas, I am sick... but if my fever breaks... I am IN the stand tomorrow!!  Let's go body fight this thing!
God Bless,
Erik

I have used these heads for 3 years. They weigh about 205 gr with the bleeder out. I do sharpen them more after they come out of the package as I have found them to be a bit inconsistent: some real sharp some others a little dull. The results are pretty darn good: 9 deer dead, 6 pass-throughs with one bad shot (spined), with the other two offside shoulder deals. This year I shot a doe at 17 yards or so and got into the offside leg: it blew through the elbow on the opposite side after squaring the heart. The head was not bent and I plan to run it through as many deer as it will take to really "test" the head. Really good head that I think is under-rated! I shoot a Palmer recurve at 57#, 30.5 inch CE heritage arrow, with total arrow weight 615 gr.

Don't forget to touch up the blades after shooting them into your broadhead target.

Undoubtedly one of the best and most accurate broadheads I have used since the mid 50's...and they penetrate like crazy.

I started out with the 220's but dropped back to the 125's. No problems with the 220's, I blast right thru everything with a 55# bow and 700 gr arrows. I just felt like the 220 on the front felt like too much for me.

Phantoms are great, but if you are shooting lower poundage (50 lbs or lower) I'd go with the Magnus Stingers. The bleeders aren't as big and you'll get better penetration.
