New (old) Bow w/pics
« on: April 02, 2007, 10:34:00 PM »
I bought a Black Bear recurve for my daughter for Christmas. It shoots so fine, I just had to have one. My daughter assured me it was not going to be that one (she loves it!).

I finally found one: 60", 45# @28, black glass belly and back with a maple riser. When I got it, there was a huge rope of a string on it (continuous loop) and a flipper rest. It shot ok, but I like the arrow closer to my hand, so the flipper came off and I put leather on the rest. I twisted up a ten strand B50 flemish string, added some yarn puffs and tried her out. Wow! From 10 to 25 yards the arrows just seem to want to go where I am looking. These are the quietest recurves I have ever seen. The slim grip really fits my short fingers.

They were made from 1972 to 1978. It has a few scrapes, but overall it's in great shape and kinda purty. If these pics work out you can see for yourself.

I have it braced at 8 5/8" right now. That worked well on my daughter's Black Bear, so that is where I started. It's really quiet there and shoots great, but I'll probably play with it some. Bear tended to recommend pretty high brace heights (up to 10 inches on some bows), but I like to drop it down for more cast.

I tried to shoot a bit tonight, but the NW wind at 30-40 mph and 29 degree temps made it difficult at best. Not much fun today!

I have a Black Bear Hunter that I absolutely love.  I just had it re-finished by Bowdoc and it came out BEAUTIFUL!  They are great bows.  I shoot my longbow a little better but I still have a sweet spot for the Bear.  Plus it is the first new bow I ever bought.

Nice bow.  Amazing the quality of mass produced bows back then.  I keep saying "Ya can't beat hard rock maple"    :bigsmyl:  ...Van
