What would you shoot with this bow???
« on: October 01, 2009, 09:34:00 PM »
Just got this bow, shot maybe 30 arrows with it tonight...  It's a 58" Thunderstick Mag, 42# @ 28" (Drawn to 29"), shooting a 30" Gold Tip 35/55 w/125 grain points (they tune out to nock and feathers to where I'm looking... ), and they weigh 380 grains...  I've got several different 125 grain broadheads to choose from... Snuffer SS (1"), Steelforce Sabertooth 2-blade (1 3/16"), original Snuffer (1 1/4"), Razorcap (1 1/8"), and I also have three of the Magnus Bullheads in 125 (4")...

I usually shoot 15# - 25# more weight than this with my hunting bows, but I'm just curious if anyone is shooting a setup similar to this and what game you've taken with it.

My impression with the minimal shooting I've done with it is that I think I'd be pulling the arrow out of the dirt using the 2-blade and probably the 3-blades too... I think it would make a really neet turkey bow too with the original Snuffers and the Bullheads in the quiver...

Any way you slice it, it is a hoot to shoot, and am really glad I picked this bow up out of the classifieds!

I'd probably opt for the two blades, but I tend to agree with you, either way you will have plenty of bow. It should be about 45# at your draw, more than enough for any whitetail. It should be awesome out of a pop-up blind for turkeys too!

What arrow are you using and what is the weight of the total arrow?

I shoot a CX Heritage 150 out of a 45 @ 29 Morrison Cheyenne with foam longbow limbs.125grain point and aluminum insert.Arrows are cut to 30.5 and I draw about 29.5 to 30inches.They fly really good.

I really like a 2016 as well out that bow if you wanna try aluminum. They fly great out of this Cheyenne and another recurve I got thats 43#s at 29.1916 might work as well.

I shot a small pig (70-80#) a couple of years ago  with a 42# Sky Hunter Supreme, a CX Thunderstorm shaft with 100gr magnus two blade...I don't remember the exact arrow weight but I know it was sub 400 grains.

The arrow cut ribs on entry and exit and still had enough "steam" to bounce down the road several feet.

I know it is a one time anectdotal story but I was surprised at how easily such a light weight  bow/arrow combination went through that pig.

I'll add that the arrow was well tuned and out of that bow was too fast for me to shoot...I would lose the arrow in flight in all but the best light conditions.

I shoot several bows which are similar--I would add that if you put some weight in the 3555s you will get even better penetration. I like the 5gpi tubes from 3 Rivers.

I have a supermag 48 that is rated at 41lb @28. I too am drawing to 29, so I figure 45lbs.

I am shooting 35/55s @ 30, with 125 gr up front, but have 150 gr on the way. Trying to get close to 400 total

Biggest improvement so far:  Went with one of CJC's (classifieds sponsor) strings.  It is a 6 strand padded to 18 at the loops.
FAST and hits HARD.
you could go more conservative and do 8 strands if you'd like-if you're up for taking a chance.
Mine will be put to the test starting tomorrow morning.
20-25 yds and it is still moving-Im sure not with the velocity that you are used to-but I have confidence about trying it on whitetail at those distances.
This is my first trad bow, just switched over from wheelie about 2 months ago.  Haven't picked the compound back up. Probably will end up selling it!

God bless,

Farmer

I'm now shooting a 32" long, 2215 aluminum arrow with a 205 grain tip weight out of my 66", 42# @ 30" recurve bow. I've opted for a 130 grain STOS 2 blade broadhead glued to a 75 grain steel adapter. The entire arrow weighs 609 grains. This gives me 14.50 grains per pound. The bow has a Dyna97 bowstring and I shoot split finger; 1 over, 2 under with a tab. Surprisingly, the arrow is very flat shooting out to 20 yards with no discernable drop. I've taken whitetail deer, feral hogs, javelina with a tip weight of 175 grains with an arrow weighing 579 grains before and.....no problems. You'll do fine pulling 45#.
