Breaking Bow String While Shooting, Help Pls
« on: October 02, 2009, 12:31:00 PM »
Hello, I shoot a 55# bear kodiak hunter recurve made in 70's and today the top string loop broke where it holds onto the upper limb.    This is the 2nd time this has happened, it has been about a year since I bought the new string and have only done moderate to little shooting.  Does anyone know why this is happening, and if the string breaks while shooting the bow does that possibly damage or twist the limbs?  It is an ammo 60'' bow, does that mean I need 56 or 57'' dracon string?

Sounds like you have a sharp edge on the upper string knock. I would check it out and sand it with 220 grit paper. A bow can be damaged beyond repair when the string breaks while shooting. One should inspect his string every time he strings his bow.

roll some cloth type sand paper(600 grit)into a tight cyclender and work it gently back and forth in the string noc. Then paint over the sanding with some clear cover girl finger nail polish.bd

How can I tell if my bow was damaged when the string broke?  It appears fine, I do not see any cracking or noticible twist in the limbs.

If you dont see anything then your probally all right. I would sand it like the others suggested. an shoot it 5 times check it. then shoot some more.  now you know there is a problem.just keep an eye on it.the sanding should take care of it.

David, all good advice1 I tell folks if you can get an old pair of panty hose or something like that and lightly rub around the edge of the limb and the nocks. It will snag, and there's your rough spot to sand. Good shootin, Steve.
