I Think It’s Started
« on: October 03, 2009, 04:14:00 PM »
Back a few months ago, I was chuckling to my self as I read an article in an Archery Magazine. A well written piece by a knowing archery friend.

Started out as a humoristic viewing of archers getting older, you know the scenarios and excuses, brighter color fletching (old colors were to drab). No more ground sleeping pads (cots get ya up away from bugs and snakes). The more I read the closer to home some of them pebbles he was casting started to land. Why?

I woke early this morning, wanted to get started after Goats and Deer an all day adventure on the Wyoming high plains. How quickly my plans have changed as I look at the thermometer, its reading 8 deg. This will mean a whole new dress code, I know that by noon it will have warmed up to high 40ies low 50ties, spotting and stalking with some stand time. Just what should I wear. This is getting more like my wife to get ready to go out for dinner, than it ever has for me to go hunting.

Holy buckets what’s going on in my brain housing? This kind of thinking never has been a problem in the past, just saddle up and get going………WHY NOW

Another issue that never in the past has been any problem, poises yet another dilemma. What  trailer do I take this year for my out of state hunt.? Pop up camper on the trailer, that requires climbing up into the bed ?......OR the 27 ft. Lodge trailer with all the bells and whistles and a Queen bed that all I have to do, is sit down on and roll into, Or do I take the enclosed trailer ?....Which will require buying a new x-large cot with mattress, ropes, pulleys and climbing harness just to get in and out the damn trailer. OR by one of  Whip”o”s tents, a new cot and mattress and forget the pulleys and stuff…….WHY

Are ya startin to see where I’m commin from and headin off to?

I haven’t even yet started on the bow thing yet……..I been shootin 65 +/- lb bows since dirt, love them short bows. I got me a new SunBear  Longbow 64”  59# @ 28”  for some odd reason I seem to be shooting 58 / 60 # bows so much better than I do my 65# bows……WHY
My old back quivers seem to have found a permanent home on the wall, giving way to hip and bow quivers……WHY
However the lighter bows do require different arrows (that’s what I tolt the wife)  I’ll just add a spiffier set of fletching something just a touch brighter with a fur tracer just for something different don’t ya know………..WHY

Neck knives really do have their place, when the belt gives way to suspenders or God Forbid comfortable camo hunting bibs…….Bibs and cowboy boots…….That’s just plain wrong. They do however, do well with a new pair of custom made orthopedic hunting shoes provided by the VA and Medicare.

On a hunt recently I was ask about my walkin stick……..It ain’t no darn walking stick !!
I use it to fend off the snakes and open up the brush for when I’m sneaking, whacking my hunting partners when I need to get their attention quietly, it’s also a mono pod for my cameras and on the rare occasion, that I may want to take a break I have been known to lean on it. BUT IT DEFINITELY AIN”T NO WALKING STICK.

Hunting places that require getting higher than my head , I’m taking great comfort in my climbing harness……….WHY……..I’m thinking that it just keeps my clothing in a little tighter to my body helping avoid any contact with the string.

Never could see a need for them bino harnesses…….never needed them before……Now I know just where my binoculars are all the time. Saves a bunch of time back tracking if you can remember where you just came from . That’s another excellent reason for the GPS and it’s instruction book………..Ya don’t need to by a new set of glass each year and can afford the BIG POWER nice made glass, helps you see that close up game that much better and you can look for your tracer bunches easier.

This is but a NANO look at what I find happening within my grey matter……What’s next.....
 manifestations in the physical ??

Am I alone in this camp ?  Are there others of you facing the same perils ??

…………………………………….WHY………………………………….

I call it "refining my system."

Now run and tell that!

Perils? oh no. I tell everyone that the lighter bows, no more tree stands, etc are just to give me more of a challenge.

I feel I'm more "efficient" now too. Less work and still connecting. LOL

Brother Vance I feel your pain.  I'm down to high 40's, low 50's on bow weight mainly due to the dreaded arthritis in my shoulder.  Just returned from 4 days bow hunting/camping in the national forest...and sleeping on an air mattress...and told my hunting bud to get that pop top camper borrowed again for the Feb. pig gig because I'm done sleeping on the ground.  We were going to tent camp in Texas but this recent little side trip exposed what a dumb thought that was.  You already know my thoughts on hunting off the ground.  You only got to fall one time, head first from 20 ft., to make you appreciate a good ground blind. I no longer hunt in nasty weather and may not stay out as long as I use to....and success is no longer measured in the number and/or amount of game taken. I like to think we've just gotten smarter...not just older and softer.  :bigsmyl:

I LOVE my air mattress! I actually sleep better in camp than I do at home. I finally broke down and bought a rechargeable air pump, though, as moisture in your breath breaks down the material of the mattress... and Clark didn't like hyperventilating.   :o

I don't skimp, get the Coleman mattress that mates with the pump. Foolproof!

I have always been too lazy to lug around tree stands, and got lazy enough to sell them after sliding earthward one frosty morning. My rifles are lightweight, but my bows weigh even less! And bow season is warmer than the firearms season. I realize that I am wasting time hunting in high winds, and rain will deny you a blood trail. Propane is far more trouble-free than white gas, and a pee bottle in the tent can save you shoe leather and burning fuel to dry out your clothes.

I have not quite gotten to the stage wherein I become a small game specialist (easier to drag a squirrel or grouse down the trail than a deer) but the thought has crossed my mind. Besides, my squirrel hunting last year ended up becoming a mission to save a baby treerat.

Yup, I call it refinement, through experience.
Killdeer~ Older and wiser...somewhat.

I always stay at a motel now when I hunt out of state, I don't have to take or pack as much stuff, and it gives me more time to watch cable TV at night, instead of freezing sitting around the camp fire having fun.  :biglaugh:

Probably the BEST part of this whole process, is the excuses we can come up with

I'm just getting things orginized   :goldtooth:

Cuz if I don't, I can't find myself in a mirror.

it must be we are just getting smarter and not just older. When I go to a big shoot like Denton hill I now make sure I can have a motel room. If I hunt I try to hunt a lot more in the good weather and not when it calls for rain all day I can stay in and watch the hunt channel on direct TV. If the weather gets down to the low teens I go out but it has to be for gun hunting, hard to pull that bow with the temp near zero. So yes we all seem to be getting older, I hope to think we just have more experence and not that fool young stud who wanted to out race a buck on the mountain top.

Well, I still camp in tents but I suppose I have to admit to the purchase of a nice ThremaRest airpad (to replace my increasingly thin closed cell foam one) and a deer cart with wheels on it.

Coincidences both, I tell ya!

Vance you have it all figured out already, no need to ask why. I love a tent camp, and all my friends around the fire. Although my idea of roughing it, does not include roughing it in my bedroll overnight. So I vote for bring the 27' home on wheels. As I have still not figured out where I am sleeping yet   :biglaugh:

Yes but your bows get soooo much quieter.  you will know when it is time to go to 40# bows.  Wingnut told me he heard my shoulder snapping and popping all the way over to his stand when I was drawing on a deer.  I went from a 65# to a 40# bow and my shoulder got sooo much quieter.

you will see a lot more deer.  Just have you harnnes snugged up real tight.  now i go to my stand and the deer wake me up eating those dang noisey arcons.

On evening in the nice warm Texas sun, I woke myself up snoring.  there was a year and half old buck standing 10 yd out looking at me, tring to figure out what that stange noise was.  I didn't move and watched him wtaching me.  he'd pick up a mouth full and look back up in the tree.  deer are sloppy eaters

OH wait! I should have taken a shot at him!!  Na then I would have just had to carry him out.  I wonder what Wingnut is cooking for dinner tonight?  Did I take my pills this morning?  About that time I hear a WHACK from Wingnut hitting a deer.  Oh dang it dinner is going to be late tonight.   :)
