String Making Novice Needs a little help
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:39:00 AM »
I'm new to twisting my own strings. I currently shoot  a 450+ string ( I think that the stuff anyway). It is an 18 strand string with double serving so my nocks will stay on the string(although just tight enough).

I want to try a thinner string, but Jim told me to make sure to pad the loops. I have no clue how to do that. Could someone do a tutorial of how to lay out he padding on the string jig so the loops are padded out to 16-18 strands.

My bow is a 57# Thunderstick MOAB. Not sure what I would need fora minimum # bof strnds, butI was thinking 8-10 should do it. I just dont know how to so the padded loops.

Also, what size/type of serving should I use, and how many layers?

ANy help would be appreciated.

On my skinny strings I like to use 6 strand 450+,I use this on bows up to 60#.I'll pad the loop ends with 8 strands of B50(4 strands per bundle). When I pad my loop ends I just run the string around a bow square for the number of strands I want, then cut them. That gives me strands about 12 inches long.Padding the loop ends is just laying in some extra strands.I then take them and stagger the length of them and just wax them into the end of my string before I start to twist it up.I double serve it,I'll serve it with .018 No 62 first and then I serve with .021 No 62 over it just enough for where the nock goes and for my fingers. This combo fits my nocks the way I like them to fit.Super Shrews come with a 6 strand 450+.

Mark, was a pleasure to talk with you and thanks a bunch for the advice. Liek I told you, I tied up a 10 strand and was very impressed in the difference. I'm anxious to do one in a 3 bundle for my other MOAB.

Back downstairs to the cave I go.......

Thanks a bunch.

What is the reason some people use dacron to pad other string material?

I currently use D97 and pad with the same, what difference would padding with dacron bring?

The only reason I use b50 for the padding is that it's a bit thicker. I just like the idea of thicker padding.... I have used the same string material for the string and the padding with great results also.
