This is the actual turnoff from Banff to the # 1 highway to Calgary.
Great picture isn't it? They had to build the animals (especially the elk) their own crossing because that was where the natural crossing was and after the highway was built there were far too many accidents.  It didn't take the animals long to learn that this was their "road."

Spent our honeymoon in Banff.  We were walking down to town from the Banff Springs Hotel; you could hear a number of bulls bugling in the vicinity.  A small harem of cows had gathered on the soccer field behind the hotel.  A gentleman had walked out onto the pitch to photograph the cows, apparently not heeding the public service announcements all through town warning folks to leave the elk alone during that time of year(Sept).  I said to my new bride "Hold on a second; this is likely to get interesting real quick".  We watched as he got to mid-field, completely oblivious to the bull that had come out of the timber down near the goal.  Suffice it to say, the ensuing fracas was exhilarating to say the least.  The gent made it to a ditch(barely); his photographic equipment wasn't so lucky......Probably not representative of elk behavior in the wild, but entertaining, nonetheless.

This photo reminds me of a spot we have in Oregon where there is a pretty good sized game refuge that crosses a hiway. It isn't a major hiway like that one though....But there is a view point turn out where visitors can pull out and see the huge elk herds. At certain times of the year, these herds are very large. Sometimes in the hundreds of animals.
 One year we were hunting in late September not far from the major crossing area, and decided to stop and watch them come down into the meadow one evening. Every day like clock work they would come down and cross the road at about an hour before sunset. My pardner an i were all camoed up and face painted for hunting . We were standing there waiting, when two motor homes full of people pulled into the parking lot and came down to take a peek.....I looked at my buddy ans asked if he wanted to have some grins? He read my mind as he grinned himself, and eased over to talk with these group of folks looking at us oddly....He starts into this tale about me being some famous world reord elk caller...He was laying it on thick too....I was watching the sun go over the hill and trying to time this just right for full effect.I pulled out my grunt tube and started started Bugling when i heard the first tell tale sign of hoofs on the rocks above us..... After a long enthusiastic bellow on my call....about 10 seconds later a herd of about 150 elk came troting down the hill accross the road right in front of us......You should have seen the looks on these folks face! It was choice guys!!!! i wish i had a vidio of that one....Of course my hunting pardner is trying his best not to laugh.....But when the folks started asking for autographs he lost it...he fell into a heap laughing histericlly as these folks were watching with a quizzed look on there faces...... We managed to get out of there without spilling the beans....i'll bet they still talk about seeing the world record elk caller on that vacation call i a 150 elk with one bugle.....
