Water-proof sox?
« on: October 13, 2009, 10:40:00 AM »
anyone ever use them? my Bean boots leak but still have lots of miles left. tried silicone but it doesn't last. thought wearing a water proof sox inside would solve the problem.

penny for your thoughts!

thanks guys

Foot sweat would seem to be an issue with waterproof socks I would think. Have you tried getting waterproof liners for your boots? That way socks could still wick the moisture from your feet.

I used to use Goretex booties which worked pretty well. Also used black rubbers to and they worked great to. Then I switched to LaCrosse and Danner, and never looked back.   :)

Stinky, sweaty feet would be worse if you lock that crap in.  Carry some extra wool socks in your fanny pack, and get some Snowproof on those boots.

Tioga....you need to "look back" occasionally to make sure nothin' sneaks up on you 8^).

This is called a vapor barrier liner:  Bread bag directly against your foot and another bread bag outside the sock.  Keeps your socks dry, which is the only way they stay warm. Moisture transmits heat, dry insulates it.  This works great under rubber boots.

You would think this would make your feet be soaking in sweat, but vapor pressure takes over and they only get a little clammy.  When it is really cold this works!!   Plus, no more stinky socks!  Just be ready to wash your feet as soon as the bags come off!

I have a pair of Seal Skinz socks that I keep in my pack (along with regular boot socks) just in case.

The Seal Skinz are waterproof. I am fortunate in that my feet don't sweat much, if at all. They are also relatively inexpensive and easy to find.

I always carry a extra pair of socks in my backpack. When its real cold out and i have a long walk in i wear a light sock in and when i get to the base of my tree i simply kick off my rubber boots and put a sock liner and then a heavy pair of smart wool socks on. I also put the sticky back feet warmers on the bottom and top of my feet. My feet NEVER get cold no matter what the temp.

Snow seal the boots!!!!!!!!!! or buy new ones and use them around the house.

What Toddster said.  Send them back.  If they are leaking they will fix them or replace them.  Just had the same problem last year.  I had them back in a couple weeks.  No charge.

why not get goretex booties as some on here suggest? Seems like the most sensible option unless you're trying to breed fumundah cheese biscuits :-)

I have used the Cabelas Gore-tex socks and they worked well.  I wore a thin liner underneath.  I don't see much difference between that and a Gore-tex liner in the boots as far as sweating goes.  My feet don't sweat that much, so maybe it just depends on the person.
