Help with 340's, please.

Been loyal to cedar for a while, and pretty confident in formulating cedar arrows. Carbon I don't know as well. Did real well with some CX 4560's several years ago (different bow) and that's about it.

I've had some Easton 340's sitting here over a year. Might as well give it a go.

These would be shot from a 54 @ 29.5 Griffen. Figured to leave them 30.5 and run about 250 up front.

Sounds right to me, and checks out on the dynamic spine calculator (which has been amazingly accurate when checked against my proven setups).

I've got to leave my 340s full length to shoot them out of my 53#@28 Super Shrew drawn to 29 1/2 and they are a hair stiff still.  

I'd start long before I started cutting.

It is helpful to read the instructions that follow the setup.  You mentioned your bow is 54 @ 29.5 but you are going to leave them an inch longer. Enter your info and see how it compares with what you came up with. If you add weight to the tip, or insert it has the effect of making the arrow weaker in spine. You will notice they stopped at 150 gr. point. Be sure to select the weight closest to what you intend to use.

I'd work with a couple starting full lenth. You may well end up where you expected, but if not...

I am shooting a 55lb at 30.25 inch draw length longbow and just tuned a new set of Axis FMJ 500'sto my bow today.  I left the arrows full length at 31 inches long with 275 grains of head and brass insert up front.  
The bow is a 68 inch Wes Wallace longbow with a modern reflex / deflex design.  The string is an 18 strand D-97.  I suspect you may find that you will be overspined even at full length. I would definately start with the shafts full length and only cut them down if you need to.

I have some 340,s made up for my longbow, I got them to shoot good but I have 305 grn up frount and mine are cut to 29. I,m shooting a 68# longbow with fastflight and pull 28" Got the weight of the arrow around 630 grns.

Bear, I believe you will be overspined with the 340's, regardless of what the chart may indicate. If you know of someone with a couple of 400's it may be enlightening to expermint with them.. In fact, depending on several factors you may get by with 500's ...   I would be interested to hear what you find..

I tried one in a couple other bows and they were way overspined, but that was with 150 up front. I'm affraid by the time I get the point weight high enough my total arrow weight will be higher than I want. Could try full length. Just gonna have to try and see.

I'm shooting 340s out of several bows, a 49lb widow and a 46lb Morrison ILF and a 53lb cut to center pronghorn. I draw 29 to 30" depending on the grip. The shortest 340 set that I have is 31".  I have 300 gr. up front giving me about 22% Foc. I also have some K2s(340s) that have 350 up front, as they are heavier to begin with needing more weight to tilt forward. I like to keep my arrows long so I will go up to the next size before I cut them down to much. I get better flight and paralax with the heavy point and insert hanging past the rest and off the back of the bow, giving it more leverage to bend the arrow coming out of the bow. I also have some 300s that are just a tad stiffer at full length than a 31 1/4 340. That is with 300 up front as well, on a beman ICS elete.
The other day I was shooting a 32 1/2 340 off of my old bear takedown with 53lb #3 limbs. That is with a dacron string at 30 draw for sure with a 2r grip. Hope this info helps.

I shoot Axis 340's full length out of an Oblak longbow (Slovenian Bowyer) 55@28, fast flight, cut to center. They fly like darts, feathers and bareshafts.

I am shooting axis 340 30.5" with 300 total up front out of [email protected] das. Same arrow would shoot well from my ACSCX [email protected].

Not sure on the amount of center shot on your griffin but I would think you would be close, maybe 1/4" longer. Do yourself a fovor and start long and trim from the back end while tuning since once the insert is installed it is not recommended to remove it with possible damaging the shaft. Also when shortening carbon arrows when you get close to the correct length trim no more than 1/8" at a time since they react very quickly to length change.

I know you stated you know how to tune arrows but we are just trying to be helpful since you said you had little experience with tuning carbon.

I shot Easton 340's cut to 30 inches with 145 up front out of a 67 pound reflex/deflex longbow.  It was not cut to center.  I got good arrow flight.  I think you should leave them long, in my experiance, carbons respond better to changes in length than to changes in point weight.  Bill

I shoot Axis 340 at 31" with 245 gr. up front out of my 21st Century Edge 62#@27,they shoot great and tuned great.

Thanks, I didn't know that about insert removal or how little length removal could register a change. I will say that it seems to me cedar is just more forgiving all the way around. Carbons seem to dramatically show any release errors or tuning changes. So your advice makes sense. I wouldn't even mess with it if I didn't have them sitting there. But I must admit, when you do get just the right carbon formula, the accuracy and arrow flight is amazing.

I shoot 340's out of a 56# longbow, cut to 29" with 350 grains up front. Bare shafts shoot great out to 25-30 yards.
