Camo tape backing didn't take
« on: April 06, 2007, 10:12:00 AM »
As this was my first attempt to put a backing on a bow, I may have not done it right.  But I thought I share my experience.  I tried gluing up a camo tape, made by Allen and bought at K-Mart, to a pecan stave I have roughed in.  It is the cloth type tape.  I had the back clean and roughed up with 50 grit sandpaper.  I wiped the back with acetone then coated it down with TBIII wood glue.  I worked out all the bubbles and then wrapped with gauze.  The next day I unwrapped it to trim up the tape and the tape peeled off very easily.  The glue had dried, but I believe the adhesive on the tape kept it from bonding to the glue.

Don't know if anyone else has had that problem but thought I'd post what happened.  Anyone else use this type of tape with success?  It looked really good until it peeled off!  LOL.....

My first bow ( have only made 3 )out of a hickory board raised a splinter after pulling it several times so I got a yard of silk at fabric store and glued it on. Looked terrible so I also put on fabric tape for looks but then decided to cover it in titebond also. Looks good and adheres good.Tell you later how durable it is. Picture is not good.

The glue you used on the bow interacted with the adhesiv on the camo tape. Wont work like that!

Biff, I thought that exact same thing as I was gluing it down.  Even thought of gluing it down with the sticky side up, but figured that with the openness of the tape, the glue would kind of flow through and hold it down.  But it didn't!  Live and learn.

Pdubya, that bow looks really nice.  I've used this tape on a recurve once and it holds really well and looks good when trimmed up.  Not too bad to clean off either.

How about using a solvent to strip the adhesive off the tape then glueing it down after drying?
