Pro or Con as arrow gets longer?
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:26:00 PM »
Is there an advantage or disadvantage to shoot an arrow 33 inches versus an arrow 31 inches?  Both arrows tuned well and setup with satisfactory FOC and total weight.

I am just wondering if there would be a good reason to use as little arrow as you need or just leave it the full length 33 in. with my draw being 31 in.

Thanks

I guess the longer shaft would catch a little more cross wind...and it's 2 more inches of shaft that has to be "pulled" through an animal.  Longer shafts would give your fletching better leverage.

I bet all three of the things are mentioned are negligible.

If they fly/tune equally well: I'd shoot the prettier ones!

My draws not as long as yours and I still leave mine full length.  Can't say I've regretted (ever) and it's saved me time.

Just thought of this!  If you ever want to move up in total weight you can add weight up front to the long ones and then shorten them to stiffen the spine back up.

For me with carbons I let my tuning determine the length of my arrows. You are drawing 31" and your arrows are 33",I see nothing wrong with that.

I have just built, i guess, a GT big game 100.  It is now 32.5 inches.  It bareshafted really well and I just glued the last feather on.

I have 315 gr. head, 100 gr.insert, 2.5 in. 2216 external footing, 40 gr. chinelle stick internal footing, 3.5 in. wrap, 3 in. feather, 11 gr. nock.
850 total gr.  27% FOC

Going to give her a try under the lights.

Bingo!!

Shoots great.  Now...  It is now 27% FOC.  I could cut it shorter (lose 6-8 gr.) to stiffen spine. Then add probably another 30-40 grains to front to weaken spine back to middle and maybe bump up FOC to 28% or so...OR leave it and call it sufficient bad medicene like it is.
