For you guys having trouble with sock eating boots try a different sock and or insole.

I bought some Carhhart boots at Tractor S. and boy are they nice, good support and pretty comfy.

Schnee Outfitter 2 boots in 10 in. Flat bottom and very quiet walking boots. They are kinda like your LLBean boots but better quality.  They do not pull my socks down.

We call it a 'stable base' but yessir.  :-D

I do like your idea about using a blanket to construct ... boot mufflers though.  That's a cool thought.
