Devil Doe Busted Me!
« on: October 29, 2009, 01:48:00 PM »
Today was a good day in the woods...second time Ive hunted this stand first time almost lost an eye when i walked into a branch with my eye open.  Last year I hunted close to hear but never connected.  Passed a small 6pt and the does never worked my way.

Got in stand early and didn't see anything until 920 where 5 does came working in from my right.  They moved in to 12 yards but stayed on my right and never gave me a shot so i tried to turn to get into position because they weren't moving.  Well when I turned they picked me off when i sky lined myself.

Anyhoot they took off but never smelled me because I was downwind so they ran 50 yards and vanished in the scrub oaks.  20 minutes later 4 doe work their way in front of me...oh yea meat down i thought.  Got up drew my recurve and SNORT WHEEZE BLOW THUMP!!!  WTF?????

The 5th doe circled behind me and was walking up from the rear...when i drew she caught my movement and blew it they all bolted!

That 5th doe though not the biggest has white stripes on her ears and they look like little horns...DEVILS HORNS!  She better not show herself again because she is going to be the first one i aim for!

Yeah and they say the old bucks are the smart ones. The only foolish doe I've ever seen was a yearling.

Those "dumb" does are the ones who teach the lil bucks everything they know.
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

There are a couple of phrases in this story that you need to work on:

"i sky lined myself" "she caught my movement "

Make sure you pick trees and positions that this is not possible.  I always look for trees with 3 levels of camo.  First always have something behind me to prevent the skyline effect, second something in front to break up my outline and third something at the choosen spot to keep the animal from seeing me draw.

I have seen the same three legged doe walk past me three years in a row, with a set of twins each time, and she has to be the most observant deer i can ever remember seeing she is always on full alert. Her sense of awareness is pretty amaizing.

Mike you have never hunted the jersey pines I bet lol!

Your lucky if you can find a tree that supports a stand lol. Only reason she nailed me was bc she came in behind me and I didn't know it...a few more minutes she would have been in front of me and there would be a picture of a dead doe lol

There are some does who will bust you no matter what. They are smart and look up into the trees. I have tried all kinds of things and even moved stands and she still will catch me. I kill them in rifle season, a little revenge.

We had a doe like that. Every time she came into the field she began looking into the trees for us. Once she found one of us she would blow and stomp. We knew we had to terminate her if possible. One evening she got to close to my wheelie bow shooting friend and he put an arrow into her at about 40yds, and the hunting got good again.

You might better get an arrow in that one before all the deer know about you   :bigsmyl:
