The results of 1 full year of practice.....
« on: November 01, 2009, 08:19:00 PM »
I have practiced for the last 10 mths with my bow. Tonights hunt was a text book evening almost. Here is the story. Please sit back and enjoy my saga..8 pt buck trailing a doe, quartering away.....draw bow, grunt, deer stops, release arrow, bow twangs, deer flinches, arrow sails perfect.... right over his back. Deer runs away, i cry  :banghead:

Now that your proficient at shooting over the back. Practice picking a spot.
I’m very proficient at over the back shot.
:knothead:   Hope you get another shot this year.

I had a similar experience last night. Only a somewhat different take on it. My arrow flew perfectly. The deer failed to stop it.
...stood alone on a montaintop, starin out at a great divide, I could go east, I could go West, it was all up to me to decide, just then I saw a young hawk flyin and my soul began to rise......

LOL! Sorry to hear it but I know where you're coming from. I didn't let it get to me and recently made a perfect shot. You'll get that perfect shot, probably sooner than later.

Thanks everyone. 2nd time it has happened... i actually laughed and cursed(sorry)  at the same time... He was a nice buck, not a monster. I would have had him mounted if i got him with the recurve, but not the compound. That alone would have made my season. My dad was busting me  saying  'i told you, you should have used your compound"  but i have shot many bigger and smaller than this one with the wheels. Just wanted something different. I will say though that i was surprised how loud the twang of the bow sounded. I think its the bow not me

Quieting your bow sounds like the first thing to do.  It's usually not too difficult.  I also quit grunting at them.  It only puts them on edge.  I've never seen a walking deer duck an arrow or jump the string.

Hey, it happens even with wheels. My buddy called today and said he missed a twelve point at 30 yards with wheels, now he says he wants a crossbow. Don't give up.

Did you see the thread with the video of the TX deer ducking the arrow?

Here is the link...

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

Best not to make a sound when a deer is present.  Give yourself the advantage and just shoot.  Some deer are pressured and react by being high strung.  Some deer are smart, some not.  I used to think I had a problem until I realized that a loud bow caused the deer to 'duck'.  I had a squirrel jump the arrow last night.  Never saw that one before... he jumped away safely when the arrow was a foot away.  The judo drew some blood but otherwise, he got away.

I agree with Fletcher. Once you grunt, that deer is cocked and locked. I shoot them on the walk. To me the whole idea is to have the deer totally unaware of your presence, until you let the air out of them!
