Removal of old inserts
« on: November 02, 2009, 10:49:00 AM »
I have a few broken shaft I would like to remove the old brass inserts. All are epoxied in carbon shafts and I looking for a easy way to remove them. Any trick that would speed it up would be nice.

I followed advice from some folks here and it worked very well. Insert a drill bit in the arrow and swing sharply. Kind of in a pendulum motion. Takes a few times, but works well.

If you're not saving the shaft, I'd heat it up. The epoxy reaches a temp where it just kind of turns to powder and spits the insert out.

Screw in a field point (not quite all the way)...heat the field point with a torch...try to pull the insert with a pair of plier after about 20 seconds of heating...if it does not come out apply heat again for 5 to 10 seconds...attempt to pull insert out again...continue this until insert comes out...once out dip the insert and point in a glass of water to cool it down.

The drill bit thing works great. If your trying to get a insert out of a broken arrow, where the tip is just a few inches long, the drill bit probably won't work. I use heat in that situation.

Well if the shaft is broken and not usable anymore I would use heat to remove the brass insert. But I use the drill bit method to remove inserts if I plan on reusing the shaft but you said it was broken.

I just hold the tip in boiling water for about a minite with a field tip installed.  Pull out with pliers.

I haven't had any problem with arrow damage.

The drill bit works most of the time. If not I get a 3" long brass screw (8x32) at HD. Screw it in and heat the end of the screw. The heat will transfer to the insert and melt the epoxy. Grab the screw with pliers and pull the insert out.
