Worn out I'm sure! (carbon shaft weighting)
« on: November 02, 2009, 10:12:00 PM »
I'm a busy feller.  Luv to read and luv the site and the archives.  But I need help now to get too the point. ( no pun intended).    Keep in mind I am a die hard heavy woody. But I've had some GT's 55/75 for many years and never shot them much at all.  Their way too light and noisy, though shoot very well.  But a month ago I thought I'd  try em' again. I added some weight to the tip;  I bought some 100gr. BH adapters and glued on my 160 grain field points. Very impressed I was.  They shot wonderfull.  My 160gr. field points and though big in dia. caused problems because of the outside of the point was bigger than the dia. the shaft.  Very hard to pull out of the target and not 'stream line' at all to make the pull easy without risk of loosing the point and insert.  I want 160gr. points on whatever weight I add as that is the weight of my broadhead.  What do I need to get the 'stream line' total 260 gr. set up for practice that will match the 160gr. broadhead I use for hunting?  Also, there is a problem in removing tips/inserts from carbon shafts that I don't know how to work around as I'm used to using heat to remove tips/inserts from aluminum and wood?  How do yall remove an insert?  What glue is there that heat would not be needed to remove the componants?  When I make changes the shaft to be be wasted.   I can emagine how much this topic has been discussed but there is so much info that I can't see straight and am wanting a starting point in my narrow questions.

Thanx yall for the help and getting me on the right path of carbon.  I can't believe I'm swinging to the carbon shafts???...........Ray...........

Couldn't you just use a 250 screw in field tip instead of 100gr adaptor and 160 glue on?

Stick a 10gr washer behind the screw in to make up the difference.

As to glue.  For tuning i used hot melt on the inserts, go careful though and have a glass of cold water to cool with as soon as the job is done.  Once i decided what was staying i epoxied them in.

The biggest drawback to carbons is having to epoxy the inserts in. It doesn't allow too much experimenting unless you buy a dozen shafts just for that purpose. You can heat the inserts by screwing in a field point and heating until the epoxy "gives way" enough to remove the insert. I am about 50/50 on ruining  the shafts. Once you know what works for you I think it is just best to let it be and shoot the arrows set up that way. However, with normal aluminum inserts and the variety of adapters, head weights and so forth, you should be able to come up with numerous combos to satisfy you need to experiment. Carbons are great arrows, IMO, and in the long run the most cost effective. You can get the small diameter field points from places like Bob Morrison. I have some that are 250 grains. You just need to spend some time checking out the sponsors but Bob really is up on the heavy FOC carbon arrow scene and he sells everything you may need.
