Looking for some pants!
« on: November 16, 2009, 06:23:00 PM »
I've been trying to make up my mind about some good all-around hunting pants. I've kicked around the idea of wool but burrs, sticktites and such kinda makes me shy away, plus the price! what do you guys suggest? I currently wear BDU style cottan pants! any help would be great, Jason

Personally, You're allready using my favorite.  I know cotton isn't the best material ,but I wear good layers underneath and I like the fact that they are quiet and comfortable.  Not to mention econonomical.

It's hard to beat what you're wearing now.  You can waterproof your cotton pants with a variety of different sprays.  I've used the Badlands Waterproofing spray with good performance on the Carharts I often wear.  Mix in a couple of different weight Merino wool underlayers and maybe a pair of calf-high leg gaiters and you'll be good to go.

I've got a pair of Rivers West pants, but they don't breathe well and are "swishy" when I walk.  The cut must have been designed for my grandpa.  I can pull them up to my armpits, and if I don't the crotch is at my knees.  They are waterproof, though, and blood rinses right off.

Go to the GoodWill store and buy yourself a couple pair of 100% wool "suit pants" for probly about $5 a pair. Good light weight hunting pants, and if ya rip them it doesn't hurt the wallet very much!!!!!

I sent a pair of brown Woolrich pants to "adkmountainken" and he's been wearing them all season.  :archer:

Duluth Trading Company - "Firehose" canvas work pants.  These babies are tough, quiet, great pockets, nice muted colors that get better with washing and bombproof - for around 50 bucks. I can't wear them out and I've put a BUNCH of miles on mine through some nasty stuff.  Barbed wire doesn't even touch these pants - though you can get hung up to the point of having to extract yourself.  Burrs don't hang in them (I hate wool pants in the Midwest too for the sticktights), only drawback is a bit too heavy/warm for me real early season.  These will outwear Carharts 3 or 4 to 1.

Wrangler's "Brush Pants".

They are tough, cheap and provide some protection against water especially when walking trough clearings and fields in the morning when the dew is out.

Depends on the temp, IMO.   If it's say 30s or better, I'm probably wearing cotton pants but if it's low 30s or lower, I've got a pair of thick wool pants from Cabelas and they get the nod.

Warmth is your buddy.

As to stickers, well - that just gives you something to do while waiting for the deer to show up.  :-D

The biggest problem with any cotton is getting wet, it is about as bad as being naked in a snow storm. Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Surplus stores are one choice.

If I hunt in cotton, the weather has to be favorable. I will still carry, gaiters, or chaps. The latter are available at Cabela's, Bass Pro and other suppliers of upland bird hunting clothing. They are available in light weight, med and heavy and they are water proof. Upland bird hunters frequently need to wear pants that provide added protection. None are as quiet as wool, and all are better than cotton when wet.

I bought a pair of pants olive green cotton cargo pants from the Columbia outlet. They were $19.  They're great if it's warm outside, and if it's cold I just layer up with some wool and base layers underneath.

Cabela's currently has a sale on wool camo cargo pants. I think that they are only $79. I'm tempted.
