I am designing a new crown and crest pattern and I wanted to know how long your crest and crown are on the arrows you make.

I have marks for 8, 9 and 10 inches on my work bench and I think most of the ones I make are 8 or 9 inches.  I really don't like to see the crown or cresting on the other side of the riser.  One of these days I'll remember to measure before I crown dip to make a crest line match up exactly to the brace height I want.

Most of mine are 8" but I do have a 7" pattern I use with feathers under 4".

I always do mine 7 1/2", thats the length of my brace height. That way I always have a way to check it with me.

I think that using part of the cap dip as a brace height indicator is a good idea.

Also, you may want to adjust the lentgh of cap dip depending on the length and style of feather you are using.

Be sure to post some pics once you come up with something.

Here are the variations I came up with. I am having it made up as an arrow wrap from AWU. I used a 10 inch crown/crest pattern with chartruese accents and a copperhead skin.

I am leaning to the one in the middle with the chartreuse at each end, snakeskin under the fletching, and my handle on the white band. I'm going to make the snakeskin band a little longer and the white band a little shorter so that I can center the fletching and keep it away from the pin-striping.

I like the middle one too. My second choice would probably be the bottom one. Cool stuff!

I always dip to 9". This length just looks good to me. Cresting is all subjective, do what looks good to your eye.
