Hogs near Lwton, OK?
« on: December 07, 2009, 01:45:00 PM »
Hey folks, I am going to (probably) be spending next summer from May through August at Ft. Sill, OK.  Does anyone have any information on open bow hunting seasons then?  I imagine that about the only option would be feral hogs, and that would be fine with me.  Are there any near there, say within a couple hour drive?  If so, are they on public land or private and whom should I get ahold of to try and chase a few on Saturdays or maybe Sunday after church?  Any information would be great!  Thanks!

Oh, and I know this is an archery forum, but if you want to throw in any hints on fishing in the area (bluegill, bass, crappie, white bass, whatever), feel free.  I'll use that too!   ;)

This is their Fish and Game web site:

I don't know if it has the information you're looking for but this will repost your question to the top and hopefully someone will chime in that knows for sure.

Good luck.

If you are going to be on base there may be hunting allowed there.  Next door is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and there are wild hogs on it but you cannot hunt there except by draw for elk and deer in the fall. Its a great place to hike and take photos.  Public Hunting areas are listed on the website listed in the post above I do not remember if there are many in that part of the state.  Hogs and coyotes are year round on private land.  Can't think of anything else that would be in season then.  Spring Turkey ends the first week of May usually.  Lots of small lakes and streams to fish on the Refuge and there are a couple of Larger lakes that border it.

There are good hog hunting locations on public land within 2 hr drive. Texhoma & wa****a river around Tishomingo is loaded with hogs. There is no season on hogs here. There is good fishing all over here. There is several lakes in Duncan owned by the city of Duncan. There is also Waurika lake west of lawton that has some unbelievable crappie in it. I live about an hour or so east of lawton so pm me iff you need any more info.

Years ago when I was a student in the Captains Career Crse at Ft Sill I shot a 150# sow in the J3 hunting compartment area.  It was opening day of elk season, 5 September, and was at least 90 degrees.  I left the field at around 1230 so that I could get something to eat and take a shower.  On my way out I saw a group of hogs and made a good shot on the first wild hog I'd ever seen.  That area had a bunch of pigs on it, PM me if you have any specific questions.  I'd be glad to help you as best as I can.

Finally, good luck if you are going there for a school!

Thanks for all the tips.  I'm looking forward to it.

Scott F: yes, I'll be there for BOLC B (what was OBC).  I'd been enlisted in the Infantry a while and decided that was a painfull way to spend a career, so I took a GTG scholarship to finish school and will commission into the FA, so I'll be haning out at Sill off and on for a while.  Sounds like a good place to me.
