Parallel Linen strand backing - how to?
« on: April 11, 2007, 02:54:00 PM »
Hey all, I'm looking at TBB Vol. 1 page 249, Comstock is quoting Baker about backing with twisted parallel linen strings and has a picture.  I like the looks and want to try it, having purchased some manufactured linen thread.  I'm planning on using Knox glue.  This is for a light draw 60" hickory flat bow that I pulled a splinter on.  I'm considering forcing a slight reflex in the bow while it dries to attempt to pre-tension the thread.  It already has some set because it was shooting before it lifted the splinter.

I have some practical questions on the process that my research hasn't found good answers to and isn't contained in the brief description in TBB.  First is how to efficiently lay out the parallel linen threads beforehand and how to handle the taper of the limb width approaching the tips and around the handle.

The other main questions I have are about glue application with twisted linen.  It seems to make sense to dampen the strands with water prior to soaking in the glue, but maybe not, seems like otherwise it would soak up a ton of glue.  Also it seems that one would not need to compress the backing whilst it dries?

Thoughts, opinions or other tips are deeply appreciated!

Thanks.
