Tell me about 1/4" raminwood for kids' arrows
« on: December 10, 2009, 08:43:00 PM »
I have two young girls (5 and 8) who would love to build arrows with me. They shoot very light recurves.  Are those raminwood shafts the way to go? Has anyone got experience with them?  I need in spine and light on the wallet.

Thanks in advance for any help.

In my experience they're perfect for what you want to do with them.

I used to get mine from the local HD.  Just pick thru to get the straightest ones.

I don't think I'd get too concerned about spine. If you're getting them at the local store a light flex in the hands will tell you if something is a steel bar or a noodle totally diferent from the others. If you order them, just use what you get.
You can get 1/4" nocks and field points that work great. Keep the feathers proportionate to the smaller size and you're good to go.
Best thing about these arrows is they're cheap and they'll shoot fast enough out of a small bow that they'll stick in most targets. That's very satisfying for a kid. Nothing more discouraging than having your arrows bounce off the target, eh?

If you want some kids arrows, I have a bunch left over from the bow build at Cloverdale last year.  Send me a PM and I'll get you some.

I would agree that spine doesn't seem to be as important a factor for light draw weight kids bows.  I have used 1/4" ramin shafts for a couple dozen arrows and they work great.  the kids had a lot of fun helping make them, especially the cresting.

I killed my first deer with 1/4" ramin wood arrows out of a pearson 40 pound brush bow when I was 11.I wouldn't recomend using above 30# but they were always tough little shafts and cheap.

The 1/4" poplar dowels from Lowe's also work great
