Ever Need A Do-Over???
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:09:00 AM »
Man oh Man, 32 yards broad side, Big Racked 4x4 Roosevelt Bull Elk, he did not know I was in the Country     :scared:     I know, I had them this year prior to season over the cow I overshot last year.... Deer come pretty easily, even Mule deer with hardly any cover...man the addrenalin kicked in with this guy and the "Spot" goes right out the window.  Well actually the spot was there but the Bull was just a bit farther away.

Bigest do-over was I had the opportunity to close the distancs as he was comming to me    :knothead:

Anybody else ever need a Do-Over?

I bet there are plenty Gene. I doubt I would feel good about how I was hunting if these opportunities weren't a part of my hunting experiences.
I have that "mental video" of every one of those moments that I re-visit from time to time and while the scene never plays out any different than reality they are more fun than frustrating(over time) Take heart the frustrating aspect will fade even though it might not entirely go away completely.
God bless you brother. It sounds like you're living your dreams.

Usually the first deer I get a shot at every year, I forget everything I know and totally miss!!! After the initial miss I am fine for the rest of the season.

Gene, I wish I had few do overs while turkey hunting this year.  I did get a few second shots but only to miss again. Good luck on your bear hunt.

I wish I could say no! When you lay your head down at night and the blown opportunity still haunts you that's a do-over!

Dang it Gene!!  Those Roosys are a pain in the butt.  Hunted them for years and they are too big too judge distance off of.  Took a buddy on a late cow hunt one year and got him on a herd the first night out.  Said she was eating away at 25 yds.  He pulled and shot right under.  Dang elk was 35.

Hee hee Mike! I've never hunted elk, but I used to always have trouble with elk targets at the 3D range. Always shooting high or low. Oddly enough, you place a buffalo at the same exact distance, and it's either a 10 or a 12 ring every time. That'll mess with ya.

Get yourself an Elk target and plop it down in different areas to get used to the size.  There is not a person here, I'm betting, that hasn't blew a shot or three by misjudging the distance.
The inboard computer will learn, given the opportunity.  At least you are not killing brain cells by using range-finders to do the work for you.  Stay at it....there are medications for night-sweats 8^).

You'll probably remember the miss longer than if you'd of made the shot. Some of my misses are my most prized memoried. It's part of the reason we choose to do it the hard way. Honestly, if I never missed , the challenge would be gone and I would probably lose interest. I love this sport. Good luck on the next oportunity. Hope it comes soon.

I haven't hunted elk, but I had an encounter with a doe fawn this fall that qualified as a double-do-over! My cousin and I had to boat across a flooded creek to get to our hunting area. When we got across, a buck stepped out at about 70 yards and watched us for a long time while we were getting our gear together. Then a doe hopped out of her bed and the chase was on. We watched them depart and Frank started to put on his face paint. We then saw a small doe walking in our general direction about 50 yards away. Frank said, "Should I call to her?" I said why not. He grunted and she came in on a trot. I was off to the left and didn't have a shot, but Frank had her broadside and shot right over her. She ran about ten yards and stopped. I slipped through some standing water and trees and had her broadside at what I thought was about 20 yards. I also launched one over her back! She was so small, we both misjudged the distance! She was only about 12 yards from each of us! Not exactly devastating as missing an elk, but still a memorable day anyway.

I never thought about killing brain cells by using a rangefinder. Now I know I better stay away from the darned things, I probably did enough damage in my misspent youth.

Do overs? Sure enough wish I had a few in my pocket.

I wish I could have had a do over on a large 8 point whitetail from last year.  I crawled over 100 yds. across a field on my belly with light fading.  The deer came through some brush that was between us, up wind of me less than 20 yds. broad side.   :D   I tried to admire my trophy before I let the arrow go   :banghead:    Man if I could have that one back.

I doubt that there are many archers that have hunted for any length of time that don't wish for a few do overs.  I know I have wished for one each of the last 3 years.
