Bow Tuning?? Do you build up your shelves?

After reviewing O.L.'s Bow tuning instructions I was curious as to how many folks do this as part of their tuning process.

For those not familiar with his method, O.L. advocates that for optimum arrow flight the arrow should contact the shelf at a point directly above the lowest point in the grip (or deepest part of the throat). Since the crest of the crown on most Bow shelves are either forward or to the rear of this point it would be necessarry to build them up to accomplish this, which he also explains in detail.

He goes on to state that most bows can be shot well off their shelves as they are if the Archer is using good form, but can be made to shoot even better if the contact point is in the proper place.

I know I haven't done this yet, and was wondering how many of you guy's have, and if so, have you noticed any measurable difference in arrow flight / accuracy.

A lot depends on the bow. Some show improvement, others don't. If you aren't happy with the flight of your arrows, give it a try. It's not difficult and is easily reversible if it doesn't help. I use a piece of screen spline under leather on the shelf. It's cheap and effective. If you just want to test it out, us a piece of screen spline covered with moleskin instead of leather, then you can just peel it off if you don't like it or if you want to replace it later with leather.

It helped my daughter's Black Bear, but mine didn't need it. I tried it on my 56" Herter's and didn't really see a huge gain. A sealskin rest worked better on that one.

The experimenting is fun anyway, and the cost is minimal.

I use stick on velcro on my shelves and if I need to build up the shelf, I cut a small(1/2" or less) piece of the velcro and put it just above the deepest part of the grip. Then I cut another piece that is cut to the shape of my shelf and apply it over the first piece. This gives the shelf a small "bump" in the spot above the throat of the grip.

Velcro and Screen Spline are both great great ideas for build-up materials.

I'd be interested to know what materials everyone else is using for their shelf build-up's, even what you use for shelf & sideplate material in general.
