NEED HELP!
« on: December 28, 2009, 03:34:00 PM »
First off I'd like to say what an amazing site this is.  Love it here. There is so much information for someone just getting into traditional archery.

Not sure if this is where this goes or not, but anyways.

I have been bowhunting for years, and just got bit by the traditional bug a couple of years ago. My wife bought me a Samick Mountain Stalker for Christmas two years ago. I know it is nothing special, but shoots well and until I can afford a nice bow it will have to do.

The handle is way to "fat" for my grip. It seems that the riser is all wood. Was just wondering if I can simple sand the handle down to make it more comfortable and while I'm at it sand the whole riser down and restain or refinish it.

Like I said new to all of this and just looking for some help.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

I had a Martin Saber a number of years ago, the same thing i didn't like the grip on it. So I changed it with a rasp and some sand paper. Finished it off with a little stain and some Deft wood finish. What ever you sand, make certain you seal the wood real good. Moisture is a laminated bow's worst enemy.

you can do that brother but just a little at a time as once its gone ya cant put it back. to seal it just use some tru oil it works real good then spray it with polyurethane. i have done this with the bow i used to have until it went Bang!!! a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the info guys. Don't want to go and mess it up...it's all I got for now, but really need to do something with the grip. Thanks again.

Heck Yes!

Lots of fun to make a bow "custom" to you.  Might keep in mind that the bow grip "feels" different when shooting than when just holding the bow in hand.  I guess I mean by that, for starters, keep it kind of "neutral" rather than some radical type of grip that may feel great and form fitting while just grasping it, and totally lousy when shooting.
Keeping the "pressure point" central to the line of the bow will help avoid "torquing" the shot.

As mentioned take your time.
And have fun.   :)
