Bare Shaft BW tommorrow

Ok, I am going to try and bare shaft tune my new Black Widow recurve tommorrow.  It is 48# @27 inch draw.  I have a full length gold tip 3355 with 9" black widow wraps and 5" shield cut feathers.

My question is this. I know that I can shoot 125's, but would you shoot heavier?  I have 12 new simmons 160's.  Is there any advantage to shooting the bigger head or would you guys trade a little cutting diameter for speed and go with the 125's?  If you guys think 125's what head would be the best for whitetail deer?

I shoot a blackwidow 49@28 drawn to 26.5inch and my gold tip 35-55 with alum insert and 125gr head had to be cut to 27.5 inch to bare shaft tune but they are tuned perfectly and shoot a bullet hole threw paper also. With you shooting a little more weight and length pull you may have to go to 55-75 to get a good tune if you shoot a heaver head my bet is you would need a stiffer arrow for shure.  Widow

Your 3555GT will shoot fine. Depending on what weight arrow you want, try 50gr or 100gr inserts with the 125gr points. And cut as needed. Good luck and congrats on a great bow, I have 2 BW and love them.

When I  bareshafted my BW recurve I ended up with a 2117 cut to 28 1/4 using a 145 tip. I was shooting alluminums at the time (

Now all i shoot is Ad trads, and can use anywhere from a 125-260 tip on them with no ill effects. Did I tell you how much I love these shafts?? Widows are FAMOUS for loving a heavy spined arrow! My longbows like a 80-85# spine when I shoot woodies.

Good luck with the new bow. I wish I could have given you more help on the arrows, but carbons are new to me as well.

If you end up with the 125's.
Don't worry about the 160's.  Just post them in the classified or a swap.  I'd be they go fast.

In any event, let me know how you made out!

125 is fine for deer. you do want some weight and just an aluminum insert and 125 with that arrow will be on the light side; you will be right at about 8 gpp.  I think you can get that 160 to work with your 27" draw and around a 28" arrow.  I would consider the 125 and a 50 gr. insert.  That would get you a little closer to 9 gpp and 18% FOC.  

If you have to you can build out your side plate.  You can always do that as you work down to tune a weak arrow.  If your arrow is long you can do that to tune them in as a check.  It is good practice to learn tuning, and as a check as you work your arrow down in lenght.  Corrugated cardboard and masking tape work for temporary strike plate build out.  

The more I work with carbons in trad bows the more I like paper tuning just like I did with my compounds.  I can cut down one arrow and tune that way.  At least if I mess up I only mess up one arrow.  If you do it a lot you will wear out the fletching on that arrow, but that is a lot better than over cutting a bunch or shafts.

Load the front of the arrow if you can, better arrow flight and better penetration.

The best point weight is the one that makes your arrows fly the best.  If that turns out to be a heavy point, all the better.  

Most any of the better known broadheads will work well for you.  Having them mounted straight and SHARP is the key.  In the 125 gr class, I can recommend Ace, Zwickey, Magnus, Eclipse, and Woodsmans.
