Weighting options - ICS carbon shafts
« on: January 09, 2010, 01:02:00 PM »
Looking hard (still) at trying carbons this year. I like the price point of the ICS's. Looks like I'll need the 400's which I'd like to bump the weight up on... Question is - is there a system / insert to increase the point weight that fits the ICS shafts? I didn't see anything on 3River's website...
I'd like to keep the weight up front rather than use weight tubes.
Thanks,
Rando

Kustom King sells a number of options for you.

 http://www.kustomkingarchery.com/Inserts--Adapters/products/104/

If you're looking for heavier inserts, the "Brass Converta Point Inserts" in 5/16" size would work quite well. They come in 50 or 100 grains. $11.95 per dozen.

They also sell stainess steel broadhead adapters (screw-in) that come in 75, 100, or 125 grains for $8.25 per dozen.

In addition, they sell adjustable converta point inserts that allow you to fine tune the exact weight you like. The 5/16" size would work well for Beman ICS shafts.

rando, what's your draw length and the holding weight of yer bow?

i use beman ics 500 venture/bowhunter shafts with 100gr brass inserts and 250gr points and that will yield a 590gr 29.5" arrow.

i shot ics 340's and 400's with limited success, the turning point was to go even weaker in spine to the 500's.

Thanks for the replies!!
Rob - I'm shooting several R&D longbows pulling 57-63 lbs. @ 28-1/2" draw length...
Thought the Beman chart put me in the 400 category. What do you think / suggest?

i'm shooting those wimpy 500's out of a 55# longbow with between 350gr and 505gr up front.  the 400's were just to stiff.  carbons seem to have very wide spine ranges as compared to alums.  part of the equation is how you shoot, too.

If your selected spine weight is 400 or what ever with 125 gr point you should add 6lbs of draw weight (on the spine chart) to the weight of your bow for every 50 gr of point weight you go over that. thats seems to be the best formula.

I use the 100 grain brass inserts from 3 Rivers in my ICS classic shafts.  Perfect fit.

Rando,
I shoot ICS 400 out of a 58lb longbow and a 57lb 'curve.
For the longbow I add 100gr. brass insert with a 175 grain head. Total head weight 275gr. Overall arrow weight is around 540gr.
For the 'curve, I add a 50gr. brass insert, with a 100 steel adapter glued into a 160gr. point.  Total head weight is 310gr. Total arrow weight is around 600gr.

Rando,

I know you said that you didn't want to shoot the weight tubes but thought I would give you my experience with them in case you change your mind.

I am shooting the ICS 400's with the 3grain/inch tubes from 3Rivers.  I shoot a 250gr head, my arrow is 28" and 630gr total.  The FOC comes out at about 20% and they fly great out of a 53 and 61# ACS longbow.  The only bad thing about the tubes is if you hit something hard they will blow your nock out.

The ICS shafts come with a CB insert, on the black carbon shafts, and I just run a 8/32 tap thru the insert and use the PDP weights, this gives you infinite weight combinations.

I use the PDP or Gold Tip screw in weights for the same reason as ALDO.
