I have never seen that either but I'm not surprised. The intelligence and adaptability of coyotes is amazing.
Where I hunt is about half open prairies and half timbered mountain country.Where the timbered mountain meets the prairie is a transition zone, where the pine trees are smaller and sparsely spaced.White tailed jack rabbits like this edge zone. These rabbits are big,as much as 8 lbs for a large one and they turn white in the Winter.
Several times,I have watched a pair of coyotes hunt this edge zone in tandem.Always,it is exactly the same. The terrain is gently sloping and one coyote is high and one is directly below it about 20 yds. They cruise through the sparse pines in tandem, just like 2 shotgunners, waiting for one to jump a rabbit toward the other.
When one coyote starts to get ahead of the other,it sits down and waits for his partner to get even with him again, then he stands up and they continue their hunt.I was amazed the first time I witnessed this.As soon as they started,I new exactly what they were doing.
I never did get to see a chase but I have seen them hunt that same strip at least 2 more times and it is always the same.An amazing animal.
