Painting A Bow? Newb Question
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:14:00 AM »
I purchased a Bear Cub for $25 for my 15 year old and physically it is in good shape, but it has nicks and scratches - and quite truthfully, neither one of us likes the green. Maybe I'll get kicked out of the forum for saying that - lol.

One of my best friends works at a custom lighting factory and has painted various pieces of furniture for us with expensive automobile paint.

I can get any color paint I want from him even in metallics.

Can this be done to a recurve bow?
Will it hold up?
Will it affect performance?

Thanks in advance.

I should add that there is no cost to do this, but I really don't want to screw up the shooting performance of a bow.

IMO I don't think it will effect anything just put a good finish on it and make sure you don't fill the string grooves with to much paint.

It's just like putting another coating of finish on the bow, so it won't affect performance; at least not that you will notice.

Thanks. I just wasn't sure if this was something that could be done. I wasn't sure exactly what finishes are actually placed on bows.

It is good to know as I think it will dress up this bow a bit if my buddy can do it.

Ahh...good idea to do a before/after. My buddy emailed me and said he has a non-shiny black metallic that we might try.

I'm trying to talk him into it today as I'm off - lol.

George:

It is in my friend's hands now. We are going to leave the light colored riser wood on the sides with the Bear coin and spray the rest with a flat metallic black paint. It won't be a "bass boat" metallic, but I think it will look nice and be a nice surprise for my 15 year old.

The "yellow" of this Bear Cub was pretty scuffed up.

Painting the bow won't hurt a thing.

Tim,  It sounds like it's gonna look real nice.  Make sure you post pics.  Sorry to hijack your thread for a moment.

Mike, what kind of bows are those the girls are holding?

Automotive finish is great stuff for bows - tough, flexible, and looks good!

Good to know Whip, I think you'd be the one to know. I am such a softy that I had to tell my 15 year old where his bow was when he couldn't find it last night. Tried to surprise him, but just couldn't.
