Momma said I'd have days like this
« on: January 27, 2010, 07:21:00 PM »
Well, I have a doe tag left and a new MOAB waiting to kill. So I grab the climber and head to the farm. I found a spot in this little bowl where the deer seem to be traveling. I put the climber in a tree and waited. Not long after getting set up two doe start down the trail. Problem was, it was the wrong trail. They were behind me!    :scared:
Needless to say, they got my wind and were gone. No biggie, it's only 3 oclock. Well the night only got better. I managed to see 15 deer all together. But 15 deer managed to see me as well. I've never been winded so much in my entire life! Now I see why I never threw a stand in this spot.
So with about 15 minutes left and frozen toes I decided enough was enough. I take two practice shots and lower my bow to the ground. As I get ready to climb down I look back and see 2 does coming at me. Just great. I look to the ground and see the MOAB smiling up at me. Didn't matter anyway cause they joined the rest and winded me.
Maybe I shouldn't have worn my Brut tonight.    :bigsmyl:
All in all I had fun. About as much fun as one can have in 25 degree weather with 20 mph winds.
I was able to see a nice 8(about 120's class) in our other field. He'll be a good one next year.
Tomorrows another day and I have 10 days left.
Thanks for coming along.

Mike

Hey Mike, that's a pretty good day!

The deer I've been seeing lately have been pretty edgy ,even when up-wind; they just seem to know that things aren't right sometimes---but still good times!

BEN-They were edgy alright. High alert. And then throw in 3-4 at a pop and it makes it that much more dificcult.

John3-We close next Sat.(Feb.7) Problem with this time of year is you have to scan the heads reeeeeel good. Hate to shoot a big buck thats dropped already.

Jerry-All n all I probably saw 70 deer on my drive from the farm. ANd thats only counting OUR farm. Saw alot more in other fields. Only one set of antlers out of the whole bunch. Saw a group of about 20 over the hill from me in another field behind our cabin. I'll try there Monday.Until then.

I don't know if deer are gettin smarter, or if i'm gettin smellier, but these things seem to happen more often these days.

leatherneck, I hate to say it, but it might be the bow. I hunted with my new moab all season and never killed a deer. I killed about everything else, but no deer. It is the sweetest bow I have ever shot, it just won't kill deer. Hopefully you can prove me wrong. Go get em!

Get outa those trees...this time of year you will stick out like a t%&d in a punch bowl.  Stay on the ground...you will be warmer and can move if necessary to accomodate the wind.  Trees are for birds son....I say they are for birds...not bowhunters 8^).

No thanks George. The bucks around these parts have a way of nailing you on the ground. It wasn't me they were seeing, it was me they were smelling!!!!!   :bigsmyl:   Got alot of highwalls in these areas and it makes it hard to ground hunt. Although I did manage a doe earlier this season on the ground. Plus, all this KOM clothing can't go to waste. I just misjudged the weather and wore lighter boots. My tosies got cold. I think I'll just stay in the trees. Bad day is all.

Mike,

Same thing happened to me in N MO this year, all ya can do is try to keep the wind in your face and hope the thermals don't undermine you.

Your hunt Numbers about equals what I've seen all year, but I feel lucky to had gotten a buck and a doe.  We have another month of archery season here in AR, and I want to put some more time on the stand.  "blood makes the grass grow".  Hope you score soon.

Well, "Death from above" has more than one meaning my friend.  You can have those aerial perches...just be careful and use a harness.  I had a friend who two years ago, just about died from a misstep.

I hear ya George. I wont climb my tree without one. I fell about 10 years ago and my harness saved me. Didn't do much for my soiled pants, but saved me. Makes a man think about things.

buckster-Yea, this time of year the deer around here are pretty grouped up. Not real hard to find them, just to get an arrow off. I've had a good seaason taking a buck and doe already. Just out enjoying whats left of the 2009 season. Another deer, well, would just be icing on the cake.   :bigsmyl:
