Texas Public Land Hunting
« on: January 29, 2010, 05:46:00 PM »
I have talked with a few people about hunting public land in Texas but I still have a lot of questions about, so if you have knowledge in it I would like to learn more about.

Is there any place that I can hunt hogs year round? I am looking for a place that I can walk on (Type 2) without to much problem. I am also looking for a place near Houston (I am on the southwest side of Houston) if that it possible? Is the Sam Houston National Forest open year round? Any other places that are possible to hunt with out getting arrested.

Thank you,
Chester

Chester, I just sent and got replies from the State about hunting Hogs in Sam Houston WMA. There is camp grounds in it and has lots of room to hunt…

I'll be going up there later in spring early summer to do some camping and hunting… You just need a Texas Hunting licenses and the APH permit to hunt there. I am now waiting on a email from Sam Houston park rangers. I'll post what they have to say...

Sal,

I was under the impression that there was a closed season, so I would appreciate to hear what you hear back from them.

Sam Houston WMA map

look at page 2 and You will see hog hunting is Open Year round. Also You'll see dates for other game that is legal to hunt there.

Note: date will change next season.

I’m not a fan of draw hunts.  Not a fan of compartments either.  Here is a good piece of advice:   If you want frequent, fun, non draw, low hassle  (very few rules) , HARD hunts…… then stay away from Texas Parks and Wildlife Lands.  That’s just my humble opinion.  The Federal (not state) lands in Texas will give you much more fun with guaranteed access and less B.S.   And there are tons of federal agencies that put em on.
I haven’t done Sam Houston but have done east Texas.
I am all bout a group hunt in the summertime.   Texas Tradganger group hunt would be a trip.

I really do not hunt the public lands, we enter them all the time and fish. But i am totally with Fishnhunt - from what i have heard - here in east texas fed lands are better by far.

We have several public areas right around us - way over populated come spring. Lots of people come and hunt the heck out of them, deer season - not so much. Personally i hunt private land, I know hogs are year round and around here we see them about everyday. The rains are back and the rivers rising pushing everything out of the bottoms.

If you do come hunt east texas check White oak creek and sulpher river areas - that place is CRAWLING with hogs - non stop.....

Ok, I emailed SHNF (Sam Houston National Forest) they sent me some information and also got a email from a SHNF employee. They told me where they have had a problem with hogs this past summer.

The area of SHNF is the Stubblefield Lake Recreation Area which information can be found on the  National Forests & Grasslands in Texas website

I'm hoping to be up that way soon. April being the latest, Then again some time in the summer. Which I'm hoping we can have a camping get together Tradgang Hog hunt. More Information on that later..

I would think the Davy Crockett National Forest should have some good area's to hunt. We have family property just west of it, and have plenty pigs move through. Good Luck!
