Question for Wood Experts....
« on: January 31, 2010, 08:26:00 AM »
Does anyone know the difference between Red Cedar and Juniper?       Is one woodbetter than the other for cores? Or should it only be used as veneers?    :help:   Thanks >>>>~~~~~>

Ishi used juniper for his sinew backed bow, but for glass laminated bow, juniper is used as veneers. As for red cedar I have never seen it in a laminated bow, and I would think that it is too oily to glue it. But I might be wrong ...

Juniper makes for great veneers as will cedar but neither would be good core woods.  I use red cedar in making boats and it does glue well and epoxy and glass take to it well.  I would stick to traditional core woods and pretty them up with these veneers.

I've made bows out of both cedar and juniper.  Juniper is quite a bit stronger. In fact I have a longbow and a recurve made with juniper that are still shooting fine.  I have a longbow with cedar as well,  but wouldn't put cedar in a recurve unless it was in a veneer.  Supposedly cedar from the middle part of the country (Tennessee, Virginia, Missouri, etc) is better for building bows.  I don't know how true that is though, just something I heard once.

Eastern Red Cedar is a Juniper.  Wetern cedar is not.  ERC makes good wood bows if backed.  Go to Apex predator bows to see what it looks like under glass.
