I bet if you were to spauld it down then post it someplace like P.A. you could trade it for something like tanned hides, knives..ect just about anything primitive.

If you found a knapping site the price might even go up more.

If you are wondering about it's dollar value, I read somewhere that Rainbow Obsidian generally goes for less than 40$ per pound, and common Obsidian for about 20$ per pound..
However, if that whole 40# bolder is Rainbow, than double or triple the price, since a bolder that big is uncommon!

Note that this is what I read some time ago and I am not 100% sure of it's correctness  :p

Last January I bought obsidian at Quartzsite, AZ for $.50 lb. Can you blame me for loading up 60 lbs?

It all depends on what part of the country your trying to sell it in also. Oregon they have it laying all over the place. Minnesota they have none. 40 pounder if a fair sized piece, but the shape and internal flaws will dictate the price. The fellow I hunt with in Oregon has a 400 pounder in the wifes rock garden. Its not for sale. But is one big chunk of glass 36" diameter pumpkin colored butte.

I found a big rock that looks like obsidian; its probably 3 feet across. I assume to find out if it is I should smack it with something and see what it looks like inside.. but if glass goes flying..there must be a way to do it safely ?

Beendare, obsidian comes in many varieties and the quality varies quite a bit.  Some is good for knapping, some isn't due to ash pockets, cracks, or bubbles.  For prices of knappable obsidian, just google "knapping supplies."  At knap-ins, the plain jane stuff goes for a couple bucks a pound.  The fancy colors are a little more.

That's way to big to do anything with. Probably only good for a conversation piece. I could probably find room for it somewhere in my garage though.

Yep, the quality has to be determined before the value. And I wouldn't try to spall it unless you know what your doing. Just a test flake or two.

Thats right this site makes you download pics to a host site- too much trouble.

And that boulder is 70# min. Knocked a chunk off with a hammer that is scalpel sharp- amazing stuff

This piece looks like it came from radar hill in Burns. We called that kind grey. It looks like it has some ash in it, to me. It will still flake ok but not the best.

It also looks similar to the government mt stuff in Arizona. That is considered a basalt for some reason. A lot of places have grey obsidian, Utah and Idaho too as I'm starting to remember.
