Does anyone remember him ? He used to be the Archery editor for Outdoor Life or Sports Afield. I grew up reading his articles. I suppose he's long passed, but wondering if anyone remembers his columns ?

Hey thanks for bringing back some memories. I too grew up reading his articles.

I talked with him once way back. He was a bit taken by how heavy my bows were. He told me about a moose camp where the heaviest bow in the group was a 52 pounder and some in the mid forties. He was a bit shocked by my 80 plus longbows, he pointed out that not everyone could pull them as easy as I could, I think he was afraid that I could be picking on folks for shooting lighter weight bows. Then he commented, "I bet that thing really puts out an arrow, wow."

I remember him well. I believe it was Howard who advocated lighter poundage bows for whitetails.
Incidentally his name is G. Howard Gillelan.

Yes, I remember him. He was the archery editor for Outdoor Life for 20 years, one of the original members of the P&Y Club, and a pretty prolific writer of books and articles on bowhunting and fishing. He passed away in the late 90's.

I have a couple of his books. I remember reading once where he said one of his most memorable shots was a head shot on a ground hog at 30 paces.

Thanks reddogge, I couldn't remember. I thought it might be, and figured I had it confused with G Fred. How many books did he write ?

I read decades worth of his columns. He helped convince this young (at the time) reader that to routinely kill animals with arrows would be a very rare occurence and that those who did were just anomolies. I think he killed something like two in all those decades, lol. A mule deer doe in Utah and a wooly pen sheep....

I remember G. Howard Gillelan. He actually lived in Maryland for a while. I think he was some how involved when the Tuckahoe Bowmen Archery Range/Club on the Eastern Shore Of Maryland got started many years ago. He also wrote: The Complete Book Of The Bow&Arrow.
