Adding weight to a FMJ

I'm considering on footing my FMJ arrows. Question I have is when using an aluminum shaft would it be wise to cut the shaft and include the insert from the aluminum shaft ? Also if you just use the aluminum shaft without the insert, how long of a piece do you use, and what is the estimated grain weight.
Also has tried inserting a wood dowel into an FMJ and used that to increase weight.
I saw Rob's piece in the How To section, looks like I may try that as well.

I just use a 100 grain insert in my FMJ's plus a heavy head....how heavy do you want, or are you just looking for strength?? It's easy to get an FMJ heavy without footing it.

I'm using the standard inserts because my local dealer doesn't carry anything else. So I'm looking for alternatives to ordering inserts. looking for some homemade recipes.
