Sounds like a good time Rich. I will hunting elk at that time. But someday I'd love to see your part of of the world! I do hunt our blacktails down here in Oregon. They are a real challenge. Love hunting them.

I am planning a bear/blacktail trip to POW this year.  Once that is over, I will be in touch!

I've rifle hunted them on Kodiak and I always tell people that is the BEST hunt I've ever been on...the best.  I love those Sitkas!

I will be on POW august 15th to the 25th on family vacation/hunting/fishing trip. I'll be staying in Klawock at my sisters place.

I hadnt planned to bow hunt, was going to rifle hunt, but would be interested in meeting and maybe hunting together.

I'll consider bringing the bow also and maybe we could try a Trad alpine spot and stalk.

I grew up on the island so could provide some info on where to go and how to get there. Wouldnt want to drop the cash on a float plane drop hunt, but am all ears for a boat or truck launched hunt.

I have spent quite a bit of time lately looking at POW as a place to bowhunt deer. I have set up a backpack elk hunt for this Sept but have already told my self I was going to Alaska to hunt Sitka the next year! I'd love to pack in and hunt those awesome animals next year if you'd have a flatlander from Illinois.

The buck in my avatar was taken on POW. I hunted POW a lot in 1987-1989. All of my hunting was in the alpine areas that I reached off of the road system. Hunting the alpine August till the first frost was very good, especially if you camped out so you can be hunting early and late. Early November is also good. Hunt the sub-alpine areas and use a call. You can get some nice bucks to come in to a simple call made with a couple of pieces of wood and a rubber band!

A good friend of mine, Scott Leslie, lives in Craig.  If you havn't already met him I'd suggest looking him up.  He works for the Forrest Service and loves to hunt with longbows and recurves.

A little history on me... 38 years old with a son in the Marine Corp. Been killin Whitetails and Wild Boar for four years with a recurve. Tried a Lab, but really love German Shepherds.
Labs are so freakin hardheaded sometimes!    I stay in shape just for hunting...running and weights so I think I'll be good there.

I will start making arrangments now if you like.

I see most pics are deer killed with rifles.  How long are shots?  Are these deer like whitetails (extremely warey)?  Is the terrain pretty think in general? Can you bear /deer hunt?  Don't think this is the best year fir me to come but this thread has peaked my interest for POW.

This would be exactly the type of hunt I would want to do if I ever did a destination hunt.  

Group of guys camping out DIY and someone around with a little experience.  Better post pics and stories this fall, I'll be watching.

What a great offer, wish I could take you up on it!  I lived in Sitka and Juneau a while ago and sure miss SE.  Those Sitka BT's are a lot of fun to hunt, especially in the alpine, the view alone is worth the hike.  When the sun shines, there's not a more beautiful place on earth!  

Hunting Sitka deer in the alpine is more spot and stalk, mule deer style.  Calling them in the timber is more like whitetail hunting, set up, call and wait.

For the guys who go, be prepared for any kind of weather, be in shape and have fun, you'll love chasing those stocky, handsome bucks with the orange antlers!

Holy smokes, I had no idea so many guys would want to come up here.  It's going to take me a bit to respond to all the PM's but I'll answer all your questions.  Give me a couple days, it's a long way until August.  Check out the ADFG web site for tags and license costs and the Airport to fly into is Ketchikan.  Check all that out to see how much its going to cost you.  I'm going to have to figure a way to pair this down.  Sorry but I just can't accommodate everyone.  I'm just a working stiff who happens to love to deer hunt.

Many are interested in doubling up on bears.  That season starts Sept 1.  The regs are kinda funky for nonresidents to hunt bears in the fall.  Basically you can't use a vehicle to hunt them.  You should be able to see the actual regs on the ADFG web site.
I didn't give bears a thought when I posted.  I'd really like to keep this focused on deer hunting.  We maybe can squeeze some bear hunting time in but the priority is deer hunting.  The alpine season is something special here.  It's the only long range spot and stalk we get.  We've had almost zero winter kill and I think this year is going to pretty good.

Charlie, yes most of those pics are rifle killed deer, but not all   .    
You can get within trad range, 20 yards and under with patience, patience, patience.  Is it easy no, you get busted more than not but you can approach them on the ground.  The terrain is mixed from open scrub muskegs, to thick thick undergrowth, to old growth timber stands and open alpine areas.
