How many 4" feathers from a full length one.

I have been thinking about buying a chopper, making my own feathers. I have several turkey wings. Also, was wondering how many 4' feathers from a full lenght tru-flite, like the colors. Thought this would be something to do with my 4H kids, get them more into trad. All feedback appreciated.

If you take your time, you should get 2 per full length one. I use a 4" shield chopper and i can almost always get two.

I always get 2. Now if I could only cut back to 2 1/2 or 3" Wow, now we're down to less than two bits a feather.
I use 4" and 5" shield and it's tough to get by without spending a buck an arrow on fletching alone. Figure 3 bucks for the shaft, throw a PLastic nock on and a field point, plus your time.
And we wonder how come these sticks of wood cost 75-120 a dozen
Maybe Bamboo and selfnocks is the way to go. But you best be able to harvest, grind and chop your own feathers.

with turkey feathers, most of the time ya get a pair of 4" from tru-flights or gateways.
with canada goose feathers, it's one 4" or 5".
but the goose feathers are free.
.... and better than the turk feathers :D

I usually get 3 from the wild turkey feathers I have. Occasionally just two. Just the pair from commercial feathers.
Like Rob said, one 4" or 5" from the goose feathers

Usually two, but the commercial feathers are getting shorter (because the birds no longer live long enough to reach their juvenile months) and often the second 4-incher will be of lesser quality, i.e., the quill will be narrower and feather lower with a lower or non-existent oil line near the tip.
