SW Colorado Elk?
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:32:00 AM »
Just wondering if any one has heard how the Elk herd in SW Colorado have wintered so far?
The division of wild life hasn't responded to my inquiries lately.

Thanks

I know SW Colorado has been getting a ton of snow, but have not heard anything about deer or elk issues.  Usually there will be something on the Denver area news stations if there was indeed any concerns.

If I hear of any, I will let you know.

That area has been hit pretty hard this year... I wouldn't worry too much though, Elk are hardy. They'll eat cedar bark to live if they have too.

The deer on the other hand might be another story..

Good luck,

We are just entering one of the heaviest snow accumulation periods out here. March/April.  I imagine they don't want to say too much, since so much can change given how much snow can and probably will fall between now and May.

Yeah i thoght it might be a little to soon to hear any thing.

I see they have made the archery deer tags eather sex this year so I was afraid the herds were switching again from lots of elk to lots of deer.

No reports of feeding yet, that's usually a tell tale sign when it gets really bad. Was in Gunnison a couple weeks ago, and most of the south slopes had shown strong signs of melt & the elk were moving back up mid hill a bit.

It has been a long winter with a lot of snow. From what I'm seeing the deer and elk are looking pretty rough right now but I think most have survived. The elk and deer herds are down on the winter range now. The lower elevation snow is melting fast exposing a lot of dried grass and browse. The worst of winter is over. I think more animals died this year crossing the highways between winter and summer range than anything else.

All the Elk in this area seam to be doing well and in good shape. Have spent the winter down in the pinon country. Went for a hike in the back pasture and ran into this group on Monday.
