hill cane harvest
« on: March 08, 2010, 04:34:00 PM »
I went out today and collected these. It is hill cane(Arundineria appalachiana).  I am fortunate that this native cane grows along my driveway and the stream that runs through our property. Today I got about 160 culms. I collected all "ripe" culms so some will be too small, some immature and some will have worm holes and not appropriate for arrows. I cut about 30 more yesterday.
Now, these will be separated into bundles of about 15 similar sized shoots, wrapped and set aside for a month or two for drying.

Roy, it will be a while before I'll be ready to trade if I have any cane left. I have folks I have already promised but if I have any left over we will talk. I should be able to get at least this much more from my honey hole.

I'm going this weekend to collect some down the mountain from you on the SC side.  I've got some property along the South Saluda that has a bunch of it.
