Adding color when not crown dipped ? ?
«

I've acquired a few dozen wood arrows over the past 5 years that are fletched, but not crown dipped. It's just the finished wood color. How can I add a bright color to the back 1/3 of the arrow? I wouldn't mind adding some color to the feathers, if that is possible. Sure would make the arrows easier to spot on the target, or in the grass. Thanks for your advise.

First you remove the feather's then I would mark the 1/3 with some masking tape and steel wool or 120 grit sand paper it.Then pick a paint (some use spray and some use other types) cover the remaining arrow that you dont want painted and spray it light coats(2-3).Then let it dry 1-2 days and add 2 coats of polyurethane(let dry 2-3 days) and re-fletch.the drying process is important. And I would practice on an old shaft till you get the spraying down.IMO

Be warned that crown dipping and cresting is a severe addiction, and we don't have a 12 step program for it, craft at your own risk...LOL

If you want to see them better when in the target, simply add some feather tracers to the arrows. They will have no effect on arrow flight.

If you don't want to remove the feathers just paint the top 8 or 9 inches of the shaft with the colour of your choice and a good brush.

You can also use a bright colored paint pen, yellow, white, etc. Get 'em from the hardware or craft store.
Sharpies in gold or silver. You could also get reflective 3m tape and use at the base of the nocks or as a crest. Helps finding the ones that get away!
As for coloring the feathers, dyes, like feibings leather, alcohol stains or rit dyes, dab on with a q-tip or applicator, even a fine tipped brush or sponge. Use your imagination, and have fun! No rules in that!
