Adding weight to 2413s
« on: March 13, 2010, 11:09:00 AM »
I'm trying to figure out how to add some extra weight to my 2413 aluminums.  I can't find any weighted inserts for this size, and I really don't want to use arrow tubes.  I want the weight in front of the arrow.  The only thing I can see to use right now is broadhead adapters for glue-on broadheads.  I was really trying to stay away from glue if at all possible.  I'm looking to add quite a bit of weight, because it seems like the more weight the better.

My set up right now is..

50lb Red wing hunter at 28"
Pulling to 30"
30" 2413s
125gr magnus stingers

Any help would be appreciated greatly!  Thanks!

I have know idea what spine 2413's are.Weight can be a good thing but adding weight to the front end of the shaft will weaken the dynamic spine. If your arrows are now perfectly tuned, they will be weak if you add weight up front.

To add front end weight, you need to start with one or two spine groups stiffer.A narrower shaft will penetrate better anyway so a better choice might be a 20 diameter shaft like 2016.On similar setups,I need to have about 230 grs up front on 2016's.For 2018's,I need about 260 grs up front.

3Rivers have 100 gr brass inserts for 2016's.You can turn them down to fit 2018's and they will be about 95 grs.To do this,Put a field point in the insert and chuck the field point in a drill or drill press.Use a mill file to reduce the diameter, while spinning.A small piece of shaft will help you stop and check fit occasionally.

There is also nothing wrong with glue on heads. You can use a combination of steel adaptors and points to come up with almost any weight needed. You can fine tune the weight by adding a couple lead shot ahead of the adaptor or you can file a couple grains off steel adaptors to get a pricise weight.A good epoxy like JB Weld, plus cleaning parts with acetone before gluing, will make a solid setup.

I would think the 2413s are already a bit too stiff for your setup. I may be wrong though. If they are, I would get me a pack of .30 to .35 caliber centerfire bullets used for reloading and hotmelt them into the end of your arrow directly behind the insert. This will give some good FOC weight and help to maybe get your spine more accurate.

2413's are too stiff for your bow as mentioned above. 2315's at your draw length and increased poundage would work.

You may try 100 grain brass inserts if they would fit the larger diameter.

Yeah, it seems like I am over-spined a little, thats why I figured that weight in the front wouldn't hurt anything.  Also, what are the drawbacks of being over-spined?  I understand about being under-spined, but can't really see the problem by being more stiff.

Your 2413's are very stiff .On my spine tester they spine at 90#.I've found over the years lengths of yellow poly rope of varying lengths really helps. You'll have to experiment.Ballpark try 12" in front of the piont.Wrap the ends ,shove up the arrow with a small amount of Ferl-tite and glue in your inserts butting up to the rope.I would then use a 175-200 grain piont. This should help.I just finished some 2213's the same way and shot them out of my PMA Widow, 60#@271/2" and they flew fantastic. Just my 2 cents worth.

Go to bowmaker.net and read the bow tuning information.

Too stiff or too weak means poor arrow flight and reduced penetration. It also means your broadheads most likely won't hit the same spot as your field point tipped arrows. When the arrow is properly tuned to the bow,it will be the most forgiving of are errors in release etc..
