Recurve to longbow.. my shooting got BETTER!
« on: April 25, 2007, 09:00:00 PM »
Built my first T/D longbow. It took a while to get used to the new feel but when I did my shots became more consistant. I seldom shoot groups but the number of fliers in my groups really decreased. My arrow flight is better too. I guess I built a bow to match my arrows instead of the other way around! I think I'll be shooting this bow for a long time!  ;)

Same thing happened to me. I shot recurves for years then got a hold of an old Robertson Mystical. Wow did my shooting improve! I have no idea why but it did. No more recurves for me.

I struggled off and on with recurves for a long time because everyone always said that you should shoot recurves when you first come back to trad.  I happened upon a longbow several years ago, and I have never turned back.  I too shoot the longbow much better than any recurve I have ever shot.

Howard Hill disdained the recurve, probably for good reason.  The longbow, I think, is easier to shoot due to its inherent stability due to less tendency to torque & prolly other properties I can't articulate right now.  Anyhow, I'm glad the advent of the r/d bows has caused many to list back toward "primitive" bows.  The call of our ancestors runs deep and strong, I think.

I shot recurves when I was young and then got out of trad for quite a few years and when I came back four or five years ago I naturally went to a recurve. I shot it so so but never as well as I wanted. I bought a longbow after about six months of trying to shoot the curve. I have never turned back. I shot a curve ok, but I really shoot a longbow. I love them.

I always thought I shot my recurve pretty well, and then I bought a longbow.  I'm not sure if it's because I've always wanted one, and just bore down alittle more, or my shooting style with wrist etc just lends itself to a longbow more, but I usually shoot it better than my recurve.

I was always told it should be the other way around, that you should find the recurve easier.  It just didn't work out that way for me.

Wow I have not said anything due to recurves being "easier" to shoot. I thought I was the only one who found the longbow easier.

I think the longbow is much more forgiving. As Byron Ferguson says in his book, you can't move the limbs of a longbow by torquing the string like you can a recurve, so it is harder to have a negative effect on your shooting.

I love shooting both though.

Well guys, I just built and started shooting a longbow and I definitely shoot it considerably worse than I did the recurve.  Doesn't mean I'm giving it up, but turkey season starts in two weeks and the 'curve's going hunting.
