Not a Disability, Just a New Locomotion...
« on: March 24, 2010, 06:22:00 PM »
I got myself a gimp last year and it looks like going to be around awhile. Need a walking stick on uneven ground. I'd like to hear from other hunters. What you've done to adapt and get around.

Corvus, I've been that way most of my life. For walking sticks, you can't beat hickory. They're stronger than most species for the size, even when green. Osage is also good, along with hornbeam. Oak isn't, apparently the saplings don't have the strength of bigger trees. Lighter woods like yellow poplar, cherry, and red cedar are pretty good, but not as durable as the heavy hardwoods. It's a good idea to let them dry indoors or inside a screen room in bug season, because the wood borers will infest them. Or remove the bark, which will keep the borers out.

I also carry a longbow rather than a recurve in the woods most of the time, because the stiff limb tips are good for those times you need a little extra help. Yes, I'm a bow abuser.

Corvus

A little over eight years ago I wrecked a new car and in the process I ended up with legs that don't work. After a year of not doing much I got back into my favorite hobby. I had always been a C.P. shooter this did not work for me in a wheelchair. Picked up a recurve and found a new life!! I shoot at an indoor range 3 to 4 days a week and come hunting season I have rigged up an ATV to get me in the woods , unless its raining don't miss a day. It took six years of trying but finaly scored in 2008. I thank all my buddies for the help and encouregment!!

Corvus,

I got a great walking stick for 40 bucks from Boyd's Gunstocks- they're made out of dymondwood in all kinds of colors- with a rubber bottom cap and a thonghole with leather thong in it at the top....they're a good height and have a barberpole sort of spiral cut in them to lighten them up and they're just about indestructible.

I think that might fit your needs.

I mounted a bow holder on the side of my crutch while I was recovering a couple years ago with a bad hip/leg after surgery.

Worked great and kept me hunting!! Of course I hunted out of a blind mostly.

I carve walking sticks and hike'n staffs, If you would like one let me know. The only cost would be the shipping to get it to you. Most have a tree spirit face and some animal tracks carved in. I could also put your name on it. Think about it.

I broke my back in 99,took two years to get mobile again.
Still walk kinda funny,in some pain most days,do much the same I always have, just need to think a little more, that probably took more to get used to than anything else.
Once you decide your going to do it,,you just do.
Winning or losing is not the important thing,,the important thing is how well you played the game.
