Magnus Snuffer Sharpening/MN 2010 Turkey

Turkey season is closing in fast! Amongst all the flooding of alot of prime turkey country here in southern Mn the birds have taken the high ground! The waters are receding fast, and i have several birds still in my area i hunt! The ? i have is about broadheads though, the Magnus Snuffer 160gr to be exact! I have been shooting daily getting ready for the moment of truth in a couple of weeks and was wondering how most of you sharpen your snuffers! I sharpened one the other day, i noticed how it is recommended that a file be used! I did 10 strokes of medium to fine pressure from back to front on each pair of edges and then did 10 strokes on a coarse Norton stone and then 10 on a fine Norton stone! The edge isnt bad, but was just wondering if im missing something?

When I used them I used a 12" bastard file single cut lay it flat on a table ,and after even strokes on all sides then do the same with an Arkansas stone and they should be sharp as heck.3R has a good video on the site to watch for sharpening them.you can get the file for $15.00 page 59 of the catalog.

I called 3R yesterday and talked to them about getting a good edge on snuffers. The guy that I talked to(can't remember his name) said that he prefers to use the Snuffer Kit (page 59) to change the cutting angle from 30 degrees to 24 degrees. He then files the point to get rid of the resulting needle point and makes a pyramid point as in their video directions. When I asked why the ad says not for the Woodsman, he said because it makes a needle point that could fold over and that if you file the point to a pyramid it works great. I am thinking of trying this a I never seem to get Snuffers shaving sharp.

I just sharpened my first set.
Run a Sharpie on the edge first. You'll be able to see when the edge is even after filing......just keep going until there is no more black from the marker. After you have established an edge, use the file still.......very lightly one stroke and one side at a time. I was very impressed at the edge I got just from light filing. Once that edge is established, the honing process is very simple. You must establish that edge FIRST. Use that dang Sharpie or a Marks A Lot.....trust me it works.
I honed mine on a $22 Smiths Diamond stone (750 grit; orange from Lowes). I believe I wore that sucker out LOL. A few strops on leather and now they shave.
Did I mention to use a Sharpie to establish the edge? =0)

Should i expect to get a razor edge with the Snuffers eventhough they are lower on the Rockwell hardness scale? I always thought that broadheads that are lower on the scale wont hold the razor type edge and are better suited for the more "ridgid" type edge which is what i usually hunt with anyway!

The angle is a bit steep to use as your favorite razor, but yes you can get a razor edge. Mine are more like a utility blade edge. Razor sharp, but not made for shaving. They cut very nicely which is what they're made for.
I have the 145gr. I could not lay them flat on a file....too big. I imagine you'll have the same issue with the 160gr. I sharpened them mounted.

If i remember correctly they are a Rockwell 46, i just used a 6" Nicholson file, and stroked it from back to front tapering off the pressure the further into it i got! After the stone sessions it was a broadhead that i wouldve used for hunting, not bad for a first try at sharpening a 3 blade head, just checking with snuffer shooters what i could expect from em as far as the sharpening goes? Everything else is great, arrow flight, mounting, etc!!!

The key to getting them sharp is the same as any other edge; raise a burr on one side, grind it off and raise one on the other side, then grind it off.
Once you get a burr on both sides of the edge, (and grind it off) then you can go to a set number of passes on each side, eventually getting to the point where no burr is raised.
I've found that a file is great for getting the burrs going, after that I go to stones to polish the edge.

FIDO has it down. He is doing the exact same steps I am. I finish mine on a piece of cardboard. Just take a cereal box and use the unprinted side (inside) lay that flat and lightly pull from back to front to finish the edge. Only twice per side. YOu may not be able to shave with them, but they will snap a rubber band in half like it wasnt even there and I promise you they cause serious bleeding. Good luck and shoot straight.

Thanks alot sj_lutz and everyone else! I sharpened my first ones using my affermentioned file/stone combo, and got a fair edge! It was just a matter of getting the pressure correct, really light when i get down to the fine stone and now they have become extremely deadly! Thanks again!!! PS Turks are in trouble!!!
