I shot a Little Suckling recurve one time and it was a very cool and mild mannered little bow...a bit unconventional in the looks department but shot well. Don't know if that guy is still making them and you hardly ever see any up for sale.

Otherwise, I'd have to echo the Cascade and K-Mag recommendations. Both very good shooters, with the Cascade have the advantage in most everything but price.

Just make absolutely sure you shoot whatever you plan on buying first...

Before you buy, look into the Black Mountain Sheepeater Spirit.  If it is a short bow your after that is one you need to check out.

I got Shew, KMag, Cascade, checkmate.....Black Mountain is a static recurve.  best shooting short bow for me.

Oh, man, this is going to be a labor of love!  Alot of quality bows out there just in the size I'm looking for!  And thanks, JC - your advise of shooting before buying is right on the money (no pun intended).  A lot more personal preference would seem to be the name of the game with short bows.
My sincere thanks to all you guys.  Hope to post pics of small bow success this fall.

LOL well we would not to make you job any eaiser.

Holed up in the the junction of a couple of pig tunnels, the over all length of the sheepeaters is real handy.  the static recurves make the string angle much easier on your fingers.

good luck.

I haven't got it yet so I can't say how good it is, but I currently have a Check Mate Raven on the way. It's 52" long. Heard nothing but good about it.

Gonna have Zebra wood in the riser and graybark on the limbs... Should be ready literally any day now.

Dan Toelke makes an exceptional 52" recurve, there is a beautiful Cocobolo/Juniper one pictured on his website:  www.montanabows.com,  first click "current bow inventory" then "traditional recurves". You can check out Pete Ward's review of one and get his evaluation and chronograph numbers etc.. but the short story is Pete raved about the bow and the chronograph found it very fast.

Might have been a typo but the ambush recurve I thought was 50".  Nevermind I see it was clarified up top.
