1 1/8" vs. 1 1/2" wide broadheads
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:47:00 AM »
Hi everyone!  I’m seriously considering plunking down the money to buy a set of Silverflame broadheads.  I know they cost too much and I could get a set of good quality broadheads for about a third of the price, but my thinking is this:  I have the money to spend.  I’ve read nothing but great reviews about them.  I’m a young man and I’ll have them for the rest of my life.  And they just look really, really good.

I don’t know for sure what size I should get.  The 180 grain points come in 1 1/8” wide or 1 1/2" wide.  I guess the tradeoff is the narrower ones will penetrate deeper and the wider ones will make a wider wound channel but not penetrate as deep.

I will be shooting them with a 48# longbow.  What do he experts recommend?

I'd go with the 1-1/8" ones.  They'll be less affected by crosswind and you can't have too much penetration.  Some might disagree, but I don't think an extra 3/8" of blade width will result in enough extra wound channel to matter.

they are good Broadheads, if it was me id go with the 1 1/2".

what will you mostly be hunting? if deer and pigs id go with the bigger head. Either way though both will work.

All I shoot is Silverflames. When I started using these heads Markus only made 1 1/8". These are the sharpest out-of-the-box heads you can buy. After shooting several animals witht the 1 1/8" I noticed I was having trouble with good blood trails, even on perfect shots. I e-mailed GK and asked Markus if he planned on making any wider heads. That was right when the XL's were coming on the market. I ordered some 1 1/2" XL's and the extra width made a great difference. I get much better blood on the ground with the wider heads.

I shoot 50# at my draw length and have had no problems with penetration. I have shot many animals with these BH's up to a 670# Kudu in Africa.

I kept my 1 1/8" heads and will use them in the future on very large or tough animals for the extra penetration. For most everything I hunt in the US I will use the XL's.

My set-up is 50#@29.5" Sarrels longbow or Sarrels recurve.

On a side note, on several animals I have spent much more time "tracking" my broadhead than I did the animal. When you pay the $$$ that these heads cost you don't let them go easily. Also, from experience, do not rabbit hunt with these heads. It will really burn you up when you lose one on a miss on a rabbit ( I was bored one morning).

Im going to be the odd guy.  I have both the 1.5" and the standard.  Have shot deer, pigs, turkey, a ram and elk with the 1 1/8."  I have only shot the 1.5" at deer with fine sucess, all my bow are 57-65#.
I just dont really have problums with blood trails.  The guide for my ram said that he had never seen one go down as quickly with a bow.(Before someone says Yes it was a good shot and any good broadhead may have done the same)  The blood trail I got from my 09' elk was just nasty, all with a 1 1/8"  Chances are my 1.5" my never get used again.
