Newbie wanting a mojo stik!
«
on:
April 11, 2010, 06:05:00 PM »
I am brand new here and I am looking into a Mojo stik. I have been hunting for 24 years with modern equipment but have wanted to go traditional for a few years now. I had a recurve when in middle school and I am still mad that I got rid of it. Back then faster more advanced was always better to me. Now I want to get a taste of trad again. Anything I should know? I know there are terms I am not familiar with like "stacking" no idea what this means but anyhow, wanted to say hi and I am willing to listen to any suggestions any of you may have thanks.

stacking is used to refer to how much weight a bows draw picks up when you draw it past the target length. or at least thats what im lead to believe, lol. for instance, if you have a bow whose draw length is 28", and 45# at that length then it will be around 48#@29" stacking also relates to a bow being light at first then feeling very increased in weight up to draw length. you want a bow thats smooth draw, with a consistent increase in the weight as you go.

Welcome to the journey, we all started somewhere. The important part is that you got started.
There is a wealth of information here and a lot of it is already written out somewhere in past threads. Try using the search function. You won't be disappointed.
Glad you made it!

Thanks guys I hope to get something ordered soon. My problem is I am 6 foot 4 and have a 32 inch draw so some bows won't cut it. I also am stuck on a recurve I just love the looks of them. Now if I can get past the "can it kill a deer thing" after hunting the past 10 or so years with a Mathews I will be okay. I shot nothing but instincts my first 5 or 6 years and then switched!!!! Kick myself all the time for it. Thanks for the warm welcome guys I will be here often trying to learn as much as I can,

im 6 foot 3, have a 28-29 inch draw. you should have no trouble finding a bow to fit your draw. with trad gear your draw length will be shorter than with a compound due to the diferent anchor points. most important thing to remember is that with trad equipment its all about your capabilities, and when you start theres the chance youll only feel comfortable shooting at game from 20-30 yards. this isnt a bad thing though, its up close and personal and a very big reason why alot of people prefer it this way. have fun no matter what you do though. good luck

Most of the dee I have taken with modern gear have been within 15 yds so that is not a problem at all with me. I tend to hunt thicker areas in Northern Michigan. I look forward to the challenge this fall. Now I just need to place an order and get arrows that will work etc. Thankfully I have a guy who has pointed me in the right direction as far as where to go once the bow is finished.

Adam,
I have a Voodoo. it is a great shooting bow. I am not trying to talk you out of a bow but it seems people either love or hate JD's grip. Are you in da UP? If not you could go and talk with JD. He would probably be the man to talk to. you could feel his different bows and grips. He could set you up with something that fits you! (which is important).
You should try a bunch of different bows before you decide on one. I found that I like most bows with a slight locater grip.
The nice thing about JD's bows are if you do not like them they are easy to sell. They both look and shoot good.
The other thing to watch for is dont overbow yourself! I almost did and am glad I shot a few 40 lbers. I started out looking atbows taht were 55-60lbs (way too much)! I used to shoot 70lbs with a compound and now am comfortable shooting 45 lb longbows. My Whisperstick is 50lbs and that is as heavy as I'll go right now. I have no doubt I can get a pass through with a well placed arrow at my weight on a whitetail.
Welcome and good luck.
